The Early Support pathway is for children from birth until the end of Reception year at primary school, who have a disability or significant and complex additional needs, and require ongoing specialist support from across education, health and care.
Schools can refer children by completing an Early Help Assessment in partnership with parents/carers. Referrals from reception age children transitioning into Year 1 in September are accepted until 1st May each year to enable support to be in place prior to the child being discharged. For more information please see SEND Information Hub (Local Offer) | Early Support (cambridgeshire.gov.uk).
The month of Ramadan began around the 10th March 24. Please use the link to access information and advice on Ramadan for all schools.

Bite Back in Schools (BBiS) is open to secondary schools across England and is designed for KS3 students to develop their skills as social activists by challenging a food system that is rigged against them. Running from September 2024 - June 2025, it features a powerful assembly from one of the young activists, whole year group sessions and the ever popular School Food Champions club, where students plan and deliver a social action project to make a difference to their school food. BBiS also helps students develop a range of skills from teamwork and leadership, project and time management, to budgeting and problem solving. The wonderful news is that BBiS is fully funded and fully resourced and with 80 places available for the September 2024 intake. Successful applicants will be provided with a specialised digital platform, funding and resources worth £1400; plus exclusive merch and sessions from the youth ambassadors. They also provide training and support across the year and ensure schools feel empowered to deliver - we are with them every step of the way!
The other great news is that schools can also count their participation in BiteBack as part of their local Healthy Schools Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Award - Home - Healthy Schools (healthyschoolscp.org.uk). Be part of the change in making healthier futures for our young people.

Prepare for pollen season – know your pollen triggers
Pollen season will soon be upon us and being prepared during hay fever season can help reduce your child’s risk of an asthma attacks.
Different trees and plants release pollen at different times, but changeable weather in the UK makes it hard to predict exactly when this will happen. If your child gets hay fever symptoms all year round, you could have non-allergic rhinitis or an allergy to something else.
If your child gets hay fever and takes antihistamines, start giving them two to four weeks before the symptoms normally start. Taking them early means that when pollen starts being released, the medication has already built up in your child’s bloodstream, so they may be less likely to react.
If they use a steroid nasal spray, it can take up to two weeks to start working, so start using it before your child’s symptoms usually begin.
Asthma & Lung UK have a pollen calendar to help you track and spot your child’s symptoms. You can check it out here. https://www.asthmaandlung.org.uk/pollen-calendar
How to reduce your risk of hay fever symptoms
These steps will reduce your risk of your child’s symptoms getting worse, or an asthma attack as a result of hay fever.
-
Take any preventer or maintenance treatment every day, as prescribed. This will help reduce the risk of their lungs reacting to pollen. When you have asthma, this is especially important, as the asthma preventer inhalers contain a low dose of steroid, which reduces inflammation that can be triggered by pollen.
-
Always carry a reliever inhaler, (usually blue) with you. You might also call this a rescue inhaler. These inhalers quickly relax the muscles in your airways and ease your asthma symptoms on the spot.
-
Try to stay away from their triggers, if possible. Take extra care if you’re out and about when it’s warm, humid and windy, or if the pollen count or the level of pollution is high. Check the weather on your TV or online or use a weather app on your phone to get weather and pollen alerts.
-
Take hay fever medicines. They help reduce the allergic reaction that could be making your symptoms worse.
-
Call your GP surgery or 111. They can help if your asthma symptoms get worse.

A Fully Funded Primary County Lines Themed Package Is Coming Soon from Cambridge City Council and Cambridgeshire PSHE Service
In response to enquires and feedback from many schools, a resource package to support primary teachers address the risk of County Lines in an age-appropriate way has been commissioned by Cambridge City Council on behalf of the Community Safety Partnership and the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner.
The package – called Healthy Belongings – is being developed in collaboration with the Cambridgeshire PSHE Service, The Safeguarding Board and Rewise Learning and is due for completion by the end of March 2024. It will comprise of 3 lesson plans to support the PSHE curriculum in Y6 and will focus on the following: valuing and identifying characteristics of healthy friendships, identifying coercive behaviours often linked to county lines and identifying behaviours and resisting pressure to carry a knife.
All the lessons and supporting resources adhere to good practice PSHE principles – exploring characters and themes through discussion and animation.
The aim is for the Healthy Belongings package to be delivered during the Summer Term’24 following a series of staff briefings, the details of which will soon be released.
In the meantime, to register an interest or to ask any questions, please email: community.safety@cambridge.gov.uk
Following the success of the 2023, “Speak Up” poster competition for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough schools, a new challenge has been set for 2024 in the form of the “Respect and Consideration” project . This is open to all schools for pupils in Years 5 to 8 and is intended to be a whole class competition to support e-safety and PSHE teaching and learning.
The task this year is to produce a purposeful presentation to support the development of respectful online behaviours recognising the difference between healthy friendships and unhealthy friendships and to know who to go to for support if something does not feel right. The presentation can take the form of a short play, a display for a presentation board within the school or as a toolkit that can be shared with others.
The closing date for entries is Friday 21st June 2024 at 4pm.
