SEND Transformation News Feb 2024 is our update for Parents & Carers, Schools and Professionals in the SEND System. We aim to update you about the work taking place in Cambridgeshire's SEND Transformation Programme. If you have questions, please email SEND.Transformation@cambridgeshire.gov.uk If you know someone who would benefit from seeing this, please pass on the link.
41% of teachers and leaders, who are considering leaving the state sector, cited the challenge of dealing with parents or carers as a reason (according to the recently published findings of the DfE’s annual working lives of teachers and leaders surveys).
A 90-minute session has been created, to assist school leaders with strategies and guidance in dealing with challenging parents. This will cover areas such as social media posts, aggressive behaviour, harassment, and threatening communications. All participants will receive a copy of ‘The Challenging Parents Toolkit’ - a suite of resources to support school leaders in responding appropriately to this growing concern. A course is running on 20 March, or alternatively, a bespoke session can be delivered for a single setting. For more details and to book contact Phil.Nash@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or Rachael.Schofield@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Pinpoint (Cambridgeshire’s Parent Carer Forum) is dedicated to ensuring parent-carer voices are heard by those who provide services for our children and young people. How do parents-carers feel about the local SEND services? Could you spare a few minutes and share the survey among your SEND parents and carers? They could WIN a £50 Love2Shop voucher as a thank you for their input. The winner will be chosen at random from the survey entrants. The survey can be found here: Pinpoint Annual Survey 2024. Alternatively you can scan the QR code on the picture above.
Teams of four Y5 pupils (1 team per school) can now be booked onto this year’s Maths Challenge. Heats start on the 17th April and are both fun and challenging. They are held face to face and take place after school in venues across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. Working together, children take part in two general maths rounds, an estimation round and they will also need to work strategically to tackle the ‘Memory round.’ Successful teams from the heats will then take part in the Challenge Final to be held in July. If you are interested in taking part please follow the link. School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com) using the Year 5 Maths Challenge tab.

Schools are reminded that they should not operate their pool unless the plant is serviceable and is operated by a qualified and trained, nominated Pool Carer. All staff managing school pools, the operation and upkeep of water treatment plant, chemicals, equipment and water hygiene chemicals must be trained on the LA approved course of instruction covering the full scope of their duties.
All Pool managers must obtain the CCC or equivalent Small Pool Operator’s Certificate and must re-validate this training every 3 years by attending an update seminar.
Full details of the CC Swimming Pool Guidance are available on the Swimming and Water Safety page of the Learn Together website and upcoming courses are available at this Physical Education bookings and courses link.

Do you currently have a TA/HLTA suitable to train to teach via the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship route?
Often the main barrier to training is a financial one, where candidates cannot afford to support themselves whilst they train.
Unlike traditional salaried routes, where the school has to pay the tuition fees and a salary, the PGTA tuition fees are funded via the Apprenticeship levy, meaning the only cost to the school is employing them as an unqualified teacher (minimum UQT1) for the duration of the apprenticeship. This makes it an affordable route for both the apprentice and the school.
Many schools are now benefitting from this route, enabling them to ‘grow their own teachers’ to address the current recruitment crisis in teaching.

Anglia Ruskin University are sponsoring free public speaking workshops that build confidence and employability skills in Year 10 students. The workshops are also a tried and tested method of supporting the speaking and listening part of GCSE English Language. A trainer from Speakers Trust, a charity, will deliver the workshop. The offer includes a full-day where students learn how to deliver short speeches, followed by a chance to compete in a Regional Final for the best speakers. Participation is fully funded, including materials and competition entry as well as the trainer’s visit to your school. Limited workshops are available, so schools should respond promptly to secure dates. Contact hello@speakerstrust.org for more information.

You may find yourself supporting a parent and wondering whether the behaviours you are seeing indicate domestic abuse or parental conflict. Have your say about nature in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough!
Cambridgeshire County Council, in collaboration with Natural Cambridgeshire (Local Nature Partnership) has been delegated the responsibility to develop a Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Cambridgeshire and they would like to hear your views.
Our area is one of the most nature depleted in England and your response to the surveys below will help develop a strategy to help our county to become a world-class environment where both nature and people can thrive. Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) will set priorities for nature recovery across England. Your input will help to identify existing habitats and species which it is important to conserve, as well as opportunities to increase biodiversity and create a landscape more resilient to climate change and other environmental pressures.
Whether you are an individual that cares about nature in your local area, and/or you are a local group, school or organisation that has an interest in nature recovery, we would like to hear your thoughts and ideas to help shape nature recovery in our county.

As part of the strategy to improve the outcomes and management of all children with asthma, schools are encouraged to become “Asthma Friendly” by completing a number of checks and establishing required protocols. To date 18 primary schools have already started their journey and another 5 are about to start. Congratulations are, however, in order for Guyhirn Primary School for being the first school to complete the accreditation in November; the school is now working closely with the team to evaluate the process and make recommendations to other schools. In February Leverington Primary Academy also became accredited.
To start the process simply click this https://forms.gle/pDai7w3YGu2vTaT2A or contact the team at ccs.cypasthma@nhs.net
In addition to the accreditation scheme, we can also deliver an asthma awareness assembly on request as well as online asthma training to school staff. Find out more here: CYP Asthma Training Tier 1
We also have the opportunity to be part of a focus group looking at the use of spacer devices and are looking for young people and parent/carers to participate. For more information, click the link on this Asthma Focus Group document.
Please promote this information in your parent newsletters.

Engaging fathers who are resistant to services
This free online training, which is offered via The Fatherhood Institute, will focus on the cohort of fathers who are described as ‘Hard to Reach’ or resistant to services. The session will unpick the evidence behind this, explore why, and how, fathers may resist engagement. We will work on strategies to lower resistance, including the use of motivational interviewing techniques to support relationship-based practice with fathers.
