Almost half of Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews in all Local Authorities relate to babies under 1 year of age. Babies are entirely reliant on their parents or carers to meet all their needs, and this makes them extremely vulnerable.
Early referral (once the pregnancy has been confirmed) and intervention gives prospective parents time to either demonstrate that change has happened and that they can parent the expected child or gives them time to create any change that is needed. Pre-Birth Assessments are critically important and need to be undertaken in a thorough and timely way.
We have developed a new protocol which aims to support all professionals in identifying risk factors and assist in constructing meaningful plans in partnership with parents that will protect the unborn child from harm.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Pre-birth protocol has been updated and can be accessed here
The Department of Health and Social Care have published (16th January 2024) guidance with the aim of assisting practitioners and managers across health and care organisations to provide caring, speedy and appropriate responses to individuals at risk of developing pressure ulcers.
Where pressure ulcers do occur, this guidance offers a clear process for the clinical management of the removal and reduction of harm to the individual, while considering if an adult safeguarding response under section 42 of the Care Act 2014 is necessary.
If the staff member is concerned that the pressure ulcer may have arisen as a result of poor practice, neglect or abuse, or an act of omission, local guidance should be clear about what steps they need to take and whether the local authority safeguarding duties are triggered.
These documents help practitioners and managers across health and care organisations to provide caring and quick responses to people at risk of developing pressure ulcers.
The guidance and appendices also offer a process for the clinical management of harm removal and reduction where ulcers occur, considering if an adult safeguarding response is necessary.
Pressure ulcers, which are largely preventable, cause distress to individuals and their families and create financial pressures for the NHS. While the treatment of pressure ulcers is mainly clinical, prevention is a shared responsibility.

A new sway has been developed, to help practitioners understand why it's important to identify Children Missing Education, and what to do when they are concerned that a child they work with is missing education.

Romance fraud happens when you think you’ve met the perfect partner online, but they are using a fake profile to form a relationship with you.
The fraudster gains your trust over a number of weeks or months and has you believe you are in a loving and caring relationship. However, the criminal’s end goal is only ever to get your money or personal information.
You can read about the five ways to spot the signs of romance fraud, here

The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse's new research, Support Matters, is the most comprehensive study to-date exploring provision of support in response to child sexual abuse in England & Wales.
The CSA Centre found just 468 services providing support to victims and survivors of child sexual abuse and their families, yet an estimated 500,000 children will suffer some form of child sexual abuse every year.

Introducing www.cambspborochildrenshealth.nhs.uk the new online NHS resource for parents and carers. Designed with local families, 0-19 Healthy Child Programme and other local NHS children’s services to be a go-to resource for children and young people’s health advice.
Using a collaborative approach, the platform focuses on providing easy access to health information and using evidence based topics to support the diverse needs of families.
With a mixture of original content and linking to local information, Cambridgeshire Peterborough Children’s Health is a resource supporting and connecting local services.
Built on the foundation of the NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough joint services, this new online resource combines all the online offers previously provided on the Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust website.
This is just the launch, there is still lots exciting work to come to continue developing the platform. There are also lots of opportunities to collaborate and ensure seamless linking between local resources.
Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the annual event sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
The day offers the opportunity to highlight how young people are using technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
In the UK, the 2024 celebrations and learning are based around the theme ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’.
Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on change online, this includes:
- Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology
- Using the internet to make change for the better
- The changes young people want to see online
- The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline
