Learn Together|  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

Happy New Year

As we begin 2024, I hope you all had a restful break and made some special memories with family and friends.

We know that the year ahead will comprise of changes, challenges and several special events such as being a leap year, the total solar eclipse in April and the US elections.  These events may affect us all differently but offer opportunities for our children to learn and have memorable experiences.  But this learning will only happen due to the commitment and dedication of you, the school workforce.

We also know that the education sector continues to have significant challenges.  At times, these challenges may feel insurmountable, however I know that as a Cambridgeshire community of schools there is the strength and expertise to continue to offer our young people the best provision whist working through these challenges.

The team at the local authority are committed to supporting you in the work you do, and value and appreciate the work we do together to ensure a positive impact on our young people.

During the spring term we are excited to be continuing to develop our ways of working to support you in your important role.  Together, I am confident we can continue to achieve great success.

Wishing you a smooth start to the spring term.

Year 6 English Challenge

Over the next 4 weeks teams of four Y6 pupils from schools across the county will work together to compete against other schools in the heats of the annual Year 6 English Challenge. The heats are great fun, held face to face and take place after school in schools throughout the county. Working together, children are quizzed on their general knowledge of books and other texts as well as answering questions about spelling, grammar and text types. They will also need to work strategically to tackle the ‘Memory round.’ Successful teams from the heats will then take part in the Challenge Final on Wednesday 27 March. If you are interested in taking part please follow the link. School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com).

Coming soon: Round 3 of Early Years Pseudo Dynamic Purchasing System (PDPS)

The PDPS is a register of Council-approved early years/childcare providers who are interested in operating from Council-owned premises. It will be used to advertise all upcoming opportunities including new premises, such as early years facilities within schools. Those who have not joined the PDPS at the time an opportunity is advertised will be unable to apply for it.

The next round will open in February. Applications can be submitted between 1st February – 8th March 2024. For details about the application process, and dates for virtual events visit Pseudo Dynamic Purchasing System (PDPS) - Learn Together (cambslearntogether.co.uk)

Specialist Qualification for Primary PE Subject Leaders

The recent Ofsted Physical Education ‘Levelling the Playing Field’ document identified the need for greater rigour in the leadership of Primary School PE.

For over a decade now, Cambridgeshire’s PE Advisory Service has delivered the Level 6 Primary PE Subject leadership award. This professionally recognised qualification helps develop a deeper understanding of teacher's role as a physical education (PE) leader, and Enhances the ability to design, lead and evaluate a targeted strategy for primary school PE. This qualification has been identified as best practice by DfE, and is regarded as a good use of the PE Premium funding. Details can be found on our AfPE/Sports Leaders Primary PE Subject Leaders Award page on Learn Together. Contact Ian Roberts for more details.

Residents from Hong Kong

Many families who have moved from Hong Kong have settled in Cambridgeshire, where their children are attending our schools.

For example, Comberton Village College, have had over 30 students from Hong Kong in the last three years. To support and facilitate integration, the school employs a Cantonese-speaking teacher who conducts liaison work with students and their parents, also implementing other initiatives.

Cambridgeshire County Council would like to welcome them and are keen to understand their needs. We would like to work with schools to link in with these families. If your school can assist us with this then please contact:

Schools' Allergy Code

The Allergy Code

We would like to make all schools aware of the “Schools Allergy Code”.

The Schools Allergy Code is a code of practice to help schools to keep pupils with allergies safe. It was created to give schools a set of standards and clear guidance to help make their settings and safe and inclusive as possible. Any school can sign up to the Code and use the associated checklist to ensure it is following best practices.

The link below includes a video clip lasting less than 4.5 minutes which explains more about the code. We encourage all Headteachers, Safeguarding leads and Chairs of Governors to take a few minutes to watch the clip. Schools signing up to the code will have access to newsletters and webinars to support staff in this area. The code has the support of clinicians and the Director of Public Health for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.
