Learn Together  |  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

New Climate Change and Environment web content to support schools published on the Learn Together website

On the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Learn Together webpages, a new page has been created called Climate Change and Environment for schools. The Climate Change and Environment for schools page aims to support those teachers and school leaders needing information or inspiration around this area to help their school and Cambridgeshire meet their Net Zero targets and improve biodiversity in their local spaces.

There are some links to useful websites which are updated when there are new and relevant materials, support or eco competitions and events. Many of these websites provide fun and educational material and resources for children and teachers to learn how to cut their carbon and protect the local environment.

The webpage is currently at an early stage. Therefore, if you have any ideas or best practice you wish to share, including links or information you think would be useful, please contact Gemma at climate@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Information and guidance Israel Palestine Conflict - from Cambridgeshire PSHE Service

There may be pupils who are aware of the unfolding situation in Israel/Palestine, and who may have been exposed to and/or repeating anti-Semitic or Islamophobic views via social media or via their own families, which may have a negative effect in school. Some pupils may have concerns and questions about this complex situation.

As teachers we must remember:

  • Schools have a duty to promote the ‘British’ values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
  • Schools have a duty under the Public Sector Equalities Duty (2010) to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people.
  • Schools have a duty to record prejudiced related incidents as part of the duty to prevent all forms of bullying.

In this context, staff should:

  • If they hear pupils discussing the topic, emphasise the complexity of the situation and the wide variety of views people might hold.
  • Be clear that the actions of the state of Israel, Palestinians and the terrorist organisation Hamas must not be equated with all Israelis or Palestinians or the Jewish or Muslim faiths.
  • Give children clear, simplified information about the conflict e.g Newsround or The Week Junior.
  • Ensure that they record any prejudiced related incidents, using the PRfE reporting system.
  • Maintain vigilance for pupils who are frightened or worried by media content they have seen or the vehemence of the views they might hear adults sharing and emphasise the mechanisms in school by which children can express worries and get help (worry boxes, responding to stories about people who are frightened/worried and how they can get some help (e.g. Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival, Me and My Fear by Francesca Sanna for primary aged, access to pastoral support at secondary).
  • Maintain vigilance for those who may be directly affected by the conflict due to having family members living in the affected area.
  • If upper primary/secondary colleagues decide to discuss the developing situation, for example in tutor groups, the discussion should be managed in a non-adversarial way i.e. not as a debate. It might be structured in the following way : Discuss in groups (or write down) something you know about the situation, something you think you know but are not sure about and a question you’d like to discuss/ask about the situation.

Your Culture of Safeguarding

Ofsted have now defined a ‘safeguarding culture’ (School’s Inspection Handbook, September 2023). They expect schools to have ‘an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts pupils’ interests first and protects them from serious harm’. This must be found at the heart of the school’s values and ethos, and is subsequently reflected in its environments and practices.

To assist you in developing and evaluating your safeguarding culture, the Leadership Advisers are offering a one hour face to face session, tailored to your setting, for both governors and school leaders (£100). An awareness of what constitutes effective safeguarding, and how to promote it, should be embedded within each and every aspect of the school culture. The training will explore the breadth of safeguarding responsibilities, with activities to reflect on how you can develop your safeguarding culture - and practical suggestions, strategies and tools for how to evaluate the extent to which it is embedded in practice. For more details and to book contact Phil Nash or Rachael Schofield.

Outdoor Education at Grafham Water Centre

It is a proven fact that not all children learn and excel in a classroom environment. Winter is just around the corner, and with darker mornings and darker evenings, children are less likely to get outside as much as they would in the summer months.

You may be reading a particular book in the classroom and writing about this with the children, or you might just want to have a Christmas or New Year celebration with a difference.  Grafham Water Centre would like to work with Headteachers across the county and beyond to help those children excel in their Primary Years. Perhaps there is a Geography topic the centre could help studies with, pond dipping, or dress up as Pirates for the Day and learn how to read treasure maps!.  The list is endless and the Centre can offer bespoke days to suit all schools whatever your needs.
