Help With Recruitment?

About us

Growth Works with Skills

Growth Works with Skills are working alongside Cambridgeshire County Council to support schools in their conversations about apprenticeships and apprenticeship training. You will start to see emails and postcards appear with Growth Works branding, inviting you to talk to one of the team.  They will be able to help you to think through the opportunities for apprenticeships in your school, and will connect back into the Apprenticeships Team so that we can align the apprentice and the training with the levy funds.

Learning Outside the Classroom

With the Autumn weather now upon us, we start to think about the darker nights and what different activities we could do with our children.  Being in the great outdoors has a huge amount of benefits to children, not only to be outside in a natural environment but also to help with their mental wellbeing. This then reflects on other parts of their young lives – whether this be focussing better in the classroom or their behaviour in the home, the list is endless.

Grafham Water Centre are a huge promoter of Learning Outside the Classroom and with this in mind, we would like to invite schools to the centre this Winter for either day visits, or perhaps an over night stay.  Children can try new activities, whether this be riding a bike around the reservoir or toasting marshmallows over the campfire.

If this sounds of interest, please contact the centre on 01480 379500 or email info@grafham-water-centre.co.uk.

Lexia5 research trial Cohort 2 - Recruiting Schools

This EEF Project for English Primary Schools offers an opportunity for 224 primary schools in England to further examine the impact of Lexia core5 Reading on Y2 struggling readers.

Schools who sign up to participate will be randomly allocated to act either as a treatment school and deliver Lexia or as a Control school and continue with usual teaching. Schools who wish to take part will need to complete a Memorandum of Understanding. If selected to be a control school the school will receive £1000 for completing assessments for the study. If selected to the Lexia group the school will pay £350 for the Lexia licences. Schools who complete the MoU must be prepared to participate in either category. Find out more about this reading skills software research trial from this School Information Sheet.

Mental Health and Relationships Programme - event 3 - School Leaders' Training

As part of a fully funded, year-long Mental Health and Relationships Programme, we would like to invite primary schools in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to attend a training session. One or two leaders from each school (PSHE, SLT) will gain a full overview of the programme and resources, consider their school’s needs and begin planning actions.

The leaders’ training events will be held on 7th November online (3.30pm-5.30pm) or in person 15th November, Papworth Village Hall CB23 3RD 1.30-4.30pm.

Sign up for these events and access resources using this form

A message from the new Phonics Cluster Group

We have been asked to publish the following letter to Early Years and Key Stage 1 teachers, from Amy MacLennan, Y1 teacher and Phonics Lead at Houghton Primary School:

Here at Houghton Primary we have spent the past year developing our own phonics program and policy, in line with the DfE Reading Framework, July 2021.  During this process, we realised how little networking is out there for schools, who like us, had decided not to buy in a prewritten program from the DfE’s validated phonics list. In response to this, we contacted a few local schools who were also developing their own programs and developed a phonics working clustrr. Our small group meet once a term to share ideas, concerns, resources, things that have worked and things that haven’t! We have found it really useful to touch base with people from other schools and find out what’s happening in schools other than our own.

We would like to invite you to join our group, enabling us to create a stronger, more diverse network. If this would be of interest to you, our next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st November 4.00 pm - 5:30 pm at Houghton Primary. Please let me know if you would like to attend by email at amaclennan@houghton.cambs.sch.uk

BBC micro:bit - the next gen is now live!

BBC micro:bit – the next gen is a partnership between BBC Education, the Micro:bit Educational Foundation and Nominet. Made possible by Nominet’s support, the partnership is donating a set of 30 micro:bits to every primary school across the UK that registers to receive them. The campaign aims to empower primary school children aged 8 to 11 with the digital skills to understand the world around them and shape their futures. Teachers are supported with an array of training and resources to build their confidence teaching with the micro:bit. Registration ends 18 December so there’s still time to sign your school up at bbc.co.uk/microbit.

Run for Fun Week - 16th to 20th October 2023

Run For Fun is free and open to all primary schools to encourage all children to run, walk, scoot, roll or pedal and have fun whilst moving.

The aim is for  the children to take on a movement challenge for the week – they can decide as to how and with whom they do this! The children can take part as a whole class, small group, partners or as individuals.

On the Friday of Run For Fun Week the School Games Organisers, in conjunction with Living Sport, will be setting a challenge  to see how many schools – staff and pupils alike – can get running/jogging for a total of 10 minutes at any point during the school day.

All participating schools will be issued certificates to award to those children who best demonstrate the values of the School Games throughout the week, these being determination, teamwork, passion and self-belief.

For more information, a resource pack and to register email: David.Welch@livingsport.co.uk

Difficult and potentially abusive parents

Every school to deal with and respond to parents, who are, on occasions, very challenging, due to a wide range of factors; many of them outside of the school’s control. This has been commented on by union leaders nationally, as part of what appears to be a growing trend of inappropriate behaviour towards staff which is “deeply distressing” for those targeted (Geoff Barton, ASCL, 2023). Last academic year saw a significant increase in the number of senior staff seeking guidance, from the Leadership Advisers, to manage difficult and potentially abusive parents.  Therefore, a new 90-minute course has been created entitled Dealing with Challenging Parents (running both virtually or face to face) providing practical suggestions and a toolkit of resources in response to this challenge. Training dates can be accessed via the Cambridgeshire School Improvement Service course booking system under the ‘Leadership and Management of Safeguarding’ tab.
