Compliance letter for primary headteachers

We are pleased to share with you the updated guidance for PE and sport premium for primary schools recently announced by the Department of Education.  The DfE has tightened up the rhetoric of what the funding is for and reminds schools that this funding is ring-fenced to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, sport and physical activity that they provide.

Ian Roberts, Specialist PE and School Sport Adviser has produced comprehensive guidance for schools about this grant, and it is available here.  Further to this, Ian is leading a workshop, 'Making the PE Premium count' on 23 November 23, and all primary schools are encouraged to attend.

FREE Working with Young Fathers Training

The Early Support Pathway - for children in the EYFS

The Early Support Pathway supports children with significant, complex, and lifelong needs that require a multi-disciplinary approach to meet their ongoing needs. Referrals should be made to the Early Support Pathway for children where developmental stage appropriate ordinarily available provision is not meeting needs and at least one cycle of the graduated response demonstrates that the child needs significant support in more than one area of need. Please note that for children in reception referrals to the Early Support Pathway need to be made before 1 May each year to ensure children have support from the pathway prior to being discharged. The Early Support Pathway is not currently a suitable referral route for children whose only needs are difficult/dangerous behaviours. In this case it may be more appropriate to seek support from a Family Worker in the first instance, through an EHA.

For more information about the Early Support Pathway please see SEND Information Hub (Local Offer) | Early Support (cambridgeshire.gov.uk) and refer to the section “Early Support Referrals in Settings and Schools”.

Schools with ECTs to register on `ECT Manager' by October 18 2023

The new Cambridgeshire & Peterborough TSH Appropriate body will provide very similar services to the services previously offered by Cambridgeshire County Council, and will continue to be independent of any DfE funded Early Career Framework professional development Programmes. The system to register ECTs is now open so, if you have an ECT in your school, you must register and sign up to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Appropriate Body service by 18th October. More information about this can be found here on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub website.

KS2 Writing and the Outdoors

Improving the quality of pupil’s writing remains a regular feature on school development plan. To support this goal, would you like to learn how to use your school site and other outdoor experiences to inspire writing? Then this new project is for you!

Working in partnership, Outdoor Education, English & School Improvement Advisers will show you how to develop ideas and activities to impact on KS2 writing, with a particular emphasis on engaging boys. The project will involve undertaking a range of outdoor activities and considering how these could be used to inspire writing. Sessions will be hands-on and interactive and attendees will go outside whatever the weather! For more information contact English.team@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or Stephen.brown@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

For more information contact PSHE Service or access our course brochure.

Children Previously in Care Pupil Premium Plus (PP+)

Are you are aware that you can claim pupil premium plus for children previously in care?  In additional to claiming for children who have been in care in England and Wales and then adopted, under a special guardianship order or a child arrangement order, the criteria has extended to include children who have been adopted from care from outside of England or Wales.  To claim the funding you need to see evidence of previously in care status and record this on the October Census.  Best practice is to send a letter to all families.  An exemplar letter is available here

For further advice please contact virtualschool@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Teachers Pensions - Do you know abut the online forms?

Over the summer the County Council received a high volume of paper based Teachers pension forms that required signing by an authorised Local Authority officer.  This adds in a significant amount of time to the processing of pensions documentation and there is a quicker way to do this!  The teachers pension website has all the information you may need in one place and this includes online versions of most of the forms you need to access your pension, make changes to your pension record etc.  As they are online forms they are much quicker to process and we therefore want to encourage everyone to use the online forms as much as possible. Next time you or a member of your team need to complete a form for teachers pension please check the website first to see if you can use an online version.

Letter to Headteachers / SENCOs from Cambridgeshire Community Services about Moving and Handling training

Please find the letter from Cambridgeshire Community Services Moving and Handling Advisors below:

Letter to Headteachers / SENCOS

Developing Leadership

Aligning professional development to school improvement plans on a limited budget is something which most schools are attending to at the start of the academic year. Local Authority leadership development complements some of the national courses available and so it’s important to know how they differ. Headteachers can book bespoke dedicated supported Headship time with the Professional Development & Improvement Adviser. The developing middle leadership course involves the course leader modelling leadership tasks in schools and then delegates can also try them for themselves: a very practical, ‘how to’ approach. Aspiring senior leaders are led reflectively through preparing for the role as well as receiving bespoke support. New DHT/AHTs are guided through key areas of responsibility alongside experienced LA Advisers with specialisms. The LA subject advisers also run longstanding subject leader training which supports new leaders and allows those who are more experienced to keep up to date.

Course details and dates can be found in the SIS 2023/24 course booklet and via School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com)

Resources to address vaping in schools

With a rise in the number of children vaping, NHS Better Health, Every Mind Matters have created teaching resources aimed at helping Key Stage 3 children understand the impact that vaping has on their physical and mental wellbeing. Written by teachers and featuring films co-created with young people, they encourage discussion about nicotine, what vaping is and the impact it has on both young people and the environment. The flexible resources can be used individually during form time or together as a full lesson plan. They are available to download for free here.

Local support is also available to both primary and secondary schools across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough through the Catch Your Breath programme. Find out more about the range of prevention workshops as well as targeted interventions that are available free of charge here: Catch Your Breath – the smoking and vaping programme for schools - Healthy Schools (healthyschoolscp.org.uk) For all enquiries mail: healthyschools@healthyyou.org.uk

Supporting Workplace Well-being

Looking after the adults who we ask to look after our children and young people’ is one of my guiding principles. Supporting workplace well-being in a way which is not tokenistic or a ‘tick-box-exercise’, however, can be a challenge.

Mental Health First Aid courses don’t teach people to be a therapist or diagnostician but they do teach how to spot signs/symptoms, non-judgemental listening skills, an approach to support in a crisis and ways to further help and signpost. Suicide First Aid provides a framework by which someone’s thoughts and feelings can be explored and it teaches an approach to bring someone towards safety. The Bitesize programme of Teacher Wellbeing; Teachers Working Well provides practical strategies for active self-care and efficacy.  And finally the Workplace Wellbeing Programme is set of three sessions which provides staff [either as a whole or via a Workplace Well-being Group] to use the HSE Management Standards to devise actions which they feel will impact positively on their workplace well-being. This allows schools to collect, analyse and act on data meaningfully and in direct relation to staff needs.

The training and courses I offer can be found in the SIS 2023/24 course booklet and via School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com)

You can contact me directly to discuss how your workplace wellbeing can be supported and I can also put you in touch with learners on previous courses and schools who have used approaches from training I have led.
