Autumn leaves

Learn Together  |  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

Summer at Grafham Water Centre

It’s been a busy summer at Grafham Water Centre, with their successful Discovery Club running; places were offered under the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Scheme and were filled almost every week. Children have enjoyed joining in with activities such as sailing, climbing and toasting marshmallows over the campfire.

Grafham Water Centre also ran two Rotary Young Leader Award (RYLA camps) – this is a scheme which the centre has run for many years,in conjunction with the Rotary Club.  Young people between the ages of 18 and 26 take part in various activities through the week of their stay; this could be learning to sail, or canoe to help them with their Wednesday expedition where they explore Grafham – find a place to sleep under the stars and build a shelter for the night, returning to the centre the next morning!

The centre also had various other groups attend throughout the summer, ranging from Church Groups, Burns Camp, and Craft Groups, just to name a few.

If you might be interested in bringing your school to Grafham Water Centre this Autumn term or any time in the future, please contact: info@grafham-water-centre.co.uk.

About us

Children Previously in Care Pupil Premium Plus (PP+)

Are you are aware that you can claim pupil premium plus for children previously in care?  In additional to claiming for children who have been in care in England and Wales and then adopted, under a special guardianship order or a child arrangement order, the criteria has extended to include children who have been adopted from care from outside of England or Wales.  To claim the funding you need to see evidence of previously in care status and record this on the October Census.  Best practice is to send a letter to all families.  An exemplar letter is available here

For further advice please contact virtualschool@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Teachers Pensions - Do you know abut the online forms?

Over the summer the County Council received a high volume of paper based Teachers pension forms that required signing by an authorised Local Authority officer.  This adds in a significant amount of time to the processing of pensions documentation and there is a quicker way to do this!  The teachers pension website has all the information you may need in one place and this includes online versions of most of the forms you need to access your pension, make changes to your pension record etc.  As they are online forms they are much quicker to process and we therefore want to encourage everyone to use the online forms as much as possible. Next time you or a member of your team need to complete a form for teachers pension please check the website first to see if you can use an online version.

School Travel Plans for schools 2023

A school travel plan is a document produced by schools that defines good road safety practice for pupils travelling to and from school. School travel plans play an important part in encouraging pupils to walk, cycle and use public transport.  Having an up-to-date school travel plan is an important part of any planning application a school makes.

A school travel plan should include:

  • a description of the school and its environment
  • a summary of established good road safety practice and initiatives – specifically pedestrian training, cycling skills, road safety in the curriculum
  • a summary of any road safety or schools transport problems
  • proposed initiatives with objectives and targets, eg a walking bus or car sharing scheme
  • a baseline survey
  • a clear achievable plan of action
  • plans for monitoring and review

Plans are developed by schools in Cambridgeshire in partnership with pupils, teachers, parents, carers, school governors and local residents. The plan should demonstrate the school's commitment to environment and community concerns and to the safety and welfare of pupils. There is no charge to schools for taking part in the travel plan system.  A school travel plan also enables schools to formally record any issues of concern such as poor parking near the school and to access Road Safety Education team support to help address these issues.

It is important for all schools to monitor travel behaviour and to review and update plans each year.

School travel plans are completed online at Modeshift Stars.

Support with a Modeshift STARS travel plan is available by emailing road.safety@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Help us improve our local mental health services and support website: Keep-Your-Head.com

keep your head website survey

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough’s flagship mental health information and support website (Keep-Your-Head.com) has been providing reliable mental health support since 2016. The website needs bringing up-to-date to ensure it is user friendly and provides the latest information on local services and support available.  To do this we need your help!

To help shape this website refresh project, we’re asking local people to fill out a short survey to help gather feedback on the current site and how they currently find out about local information and support available. The survey will run until Sunday 17 September.

Here is the link to the survey: bit.ly/KYHSurvey

Please find the QR Code below.

Your feedback will inform the refresh of the Keep-Your-Head.com website to ensure we develop an improved all-age, single point of access mental health website, with advice and information about mental health services and support in the region and highlight recent updates, changes and useful activities. For more information about the refresh project please visit the dedicated page on the ICS website here: www.cpics.org.uk/keep-your-head-refresh

If you would prefer to share your views over the phone instead, please contact victoria.morton@sunnetwork.org.uk to arrange a time and date to take part.

National Playday

play day Sept 23

National Playday was a great success this year despite the awful weather forecast. We had multiple agencies, like Healthy you, NSPCC, Wisbech and Fenland Museum and our own volunteers, attended the event and delivered free activities for our families and young people. We were delighted to see so many local families and also many from outside of the Wisbech area.

It was a fun filled day for all involved and the team received great feedback from people including “it was an enjoyable day and fantastic activities for the children, we will be back again”.

the impact of vaping

With a rise in the number of children vaping, NHS Better Health, Every Mind Matters have created teaching resources aimed at helping Key Stage 3 children understand the impact that vaping has on their physical and mental wellbeing. Written by teachers and featuring films co-created with young people, they encourage discussion about nicotine, what vaping is and the impact it has on both young people and the environment. The flexible resources can be used individually during form time or together as a full lesson plan. They are available to download for free here.

Local support is also available to both primary and secondary schools across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough through the Catch Your Breath programme.
