Dear Reader,

Interested in Climate Change and the Environment? We want to hear from you!

As a council we are gathering data to assess what work we need to support schools in the area of Climate Change and the Environment.  We would appreciate if an appropriate member of staff, could complete the questionnaire below so we can find out what related activities schools are engaged in, and what additional support is required for schools to access what they need. This questionnaire should take no more than 10 minutes of your time. We would be grateful if you could complete this questionnaire by the end of term  https://forms.office.com/e/Bse8TW5Lwd.

New Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2023 - 28

On June 15th the new Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (RE) was published for all schools across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Rutland. The news syllabus is based on the previous syllabus but has been updated with a focus on ‘Religion and Worldviews’, progression through the curriculum with pupils considering, substantive knowledge, personal knowledge and ways of knowing. The new syllabus has been causing a lot of excitement in parts of the RE world because of its inclusivity of all religions and beliefs and the collaborative nature of how the syllabus was written that, Julia Ewans chair of Cambridgeshire SACRE, has been asked to speak at Westminster to the ‘All Party Parliamentary Group on Humanism’. There will be a series of webinars are being offered from September for schools to learn more about the new syllabus and what they will need to do to update their curriculums over the next academic year.

Report shares easy wins for Climate Change in secondary education across ALL subjects

A report published by the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) reveals there are many opportunities for better climate change education within the current secondary school curriculum in England.

A key finding was that, through supplying teacher support and assessment resources, very rapid improvements can be made to the climate literacy of English school leavers.

GCSE specifications across all subjects and exam boards were reviewed and highlighted how many concepts already taught in schools are relevant to students’ understanding of climate change and its relevance to their future lives and careers.

This report covers the many aspects of climate change that are relevant to subjects like Design and Technology, Art, or English. Please click on the link to find out more information on how your subject can cover climate change education Synthesis-Report-final.pdf (metlink.org)

Eco-Schools needs your help!

Please complete a short survey to help build a data baseline for the new Keep Britain Tidy and Eco-Schools free to use school carbon footprint calculator, the ‘Count Your Carbon Tool’, supported by Let’s Go Zero. Your answers will help make it as accurate as possible, establishing averages for use when schools might not know all the answers. It will allow schools to count their carbon across all three ‘emission scopes’. Schools can input information which will be used to produce a bespoke carbon emissions report, and provide schools with a personalised Climate Action Plan. It will be launched in the 2023/24 academic year.

All schools that complete the survey will also be entered into a prize draw. Thank you for taking part and making change happen.
