Dear Reader,

Mental Health Awareness Week: 15th to 21st May 2023

The theme for this year is ANXIETY. Because we use the vocabulary of anxiety/anxious in many conversations there can be confusion about the difference between feeling anxious and a diagnosis of anxiety. Explained simply, everyone experiences feelings of anxiety at some time – for example: before starting a new job, when IT fails during a presentation or when there’s a change in living arrangements -  but it is when signs and symptoms last longer, are more severe and interfere with everyday life/work or relationships that a professional may diagnose an anxiety disorder.

What you know and understand about anxiety will help you and can also support you to help others.

Do you know which signs to look out for? Would you know how to support or signpost someone?

What can you do next?

Important information about Appropriate Body services from September 2023 - for schools who currently use Cambridgeshire County Council's ECT Induction Service

In the Autumn Term I communicated with schools regarding the DfE’s announcement that Local Authorities can no longer act as Appropriate Bodies for new ECTs from September 2023. From September 2023, only Teaching School Hubs can act as Appropriate Bodies for newly registered ECTs. The LA decided that the ECT Induction Service will not operate from September 2023.

Both Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Authorities have been working closely with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub (CPTSH) to make plans to ensure that induction for current and future ECTs will not be disrupted.

The new Cambridgeshire & Peterborough TSH Appropriate Body will provide very similar services to our current service and will continue to be independent from any DfE funded Early Career Framework professional development programmes. Therefore, you can still choose any ECF professional development programme you wish from the options available (see the DfE information on this here).

You must continue to register ECTs separately with an Appropriate Body AND an ECF professional development programme (if you choose a DfE funded one) from September 2023, even if both of these services are run by the same Teaching School Hub.

Headteachers and Induction Leads/Tutors are invited to attend an online briefing later in May to explain the transition in more detail and answer any questions you may have.

Please book places here.

It is strongly recommended that a representative from your school attends the briefing even if you are not sure if you will be employing ECTs next academic year.

Free CPD Programme - School Digital Leader and Digital Champion (worth £13,000 per person)

A new free CPD Programme will be launching on Friday 9 June 2023 at the ICT in Education Conference.  This programme is designed to support teaching staff and leadership through two distinct learning pathways:

  • Digital Champion - aimed at Teachers or Teaching Assistants who wish to use digital technology more effectively in the classroom, developing their confidence when using new innovative technologies in daily teaching practice.
  • Digital Leader - aimed at Senior School Leaders who are responsible for developing a school wide digital strategy and taking their staff on a journey of digital change and transformation.

The CPD programme runs for 18 months and is based on a hybrid blended learning model designed to fit around the day to day demands of working life in school.  Learners can also achieve Microsoft, Google or Apple certification as part of the programme, in addition to gaining a Level 3 qualification.

The CPD programme is free to school staff, as it is fully funded via the apprenticeship levy and would otherwise cost £13,000 per person.  We are delighted to announce that we have secured £780,000 of apprenticeship levy funding to enable 60 school staff to undertake the programme.  The first cohort of 30 will begin the programme in September 2023.  The programme is open to staff from both maintained schools and academies (if necessary CCC will gift the levy funding to academies without sufficient apprenticeship levy to cover the cost of the programme).

To learn more about this amazing CPD opportunity we recommend that you register for both Digital Transformation Sessions (part 1 and part 2) at the ICT in Education Conference by visiting www.theictservice.org.uk/ict2023.  The event is absolutely free to attend, and you will not only learn about this CPD programme, but you will also hear a keynote on planning your school digital strategy and hear from three inspirational schools who have already completed their digital transformation journey.

Zero Carbon Schools

Last year, the DfE published its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, with a vision for the UK to be the world-leading education sector in sustainability and climate change by 2030.  The strategy states that by 2025, all education settings must have nominated a sustainability lead and put in place a climate action plan, but where do schools even begin?  We have invited some organisations to speak about this challenge and offer some practical first steps and resources at the ICT in Education Conference & Exhibition on Friday 9 June 2023.

Let’s Go Zero 2030 is the national campaign uniting teachers, pupils, parents, and their schools as they all work together to be zero carbon by 2030.  Every school that signs up is pledging to work towards a more sustainable future while calling for much-needed government support to help schools reach their zero carbon goals.  As a school, when you sign up to Let’s Go Zero, you receive support on setting your zero carbon targets and developing your sustainability and climate change action plan.

Transform Our World is a new, centralised, resource hub created to help teachers bring environmental action into the classroom. It includes high quality free, practical, and curriculum-linked resources to help teachers empower students to think globally and act locally.  All resources have been teacher-reviewed and require minimal preparation.

Please note there are also other sessions available at the ICT in Education Conference that specifically relate to how ICT can contribute to school net zero and sustainability goals.

For full details on all sessions at the conference and to book the sessions that appeal to you visit www.theictservice.org.uk/ict2023 - remember that places are limited so please book online now.

Cambridgeshire Teacher Internship Programme

Cambridgeshire County Council are now inviting applications for the Cambridgeshire Paid Teacher Internship. You might like to consider this route to QTS for members of support staff who have the potential to be great teachers and would benefit from a salaried training programme over the course of two years. The programme enables you to retain and develop excellent staff members, grow your own teacher and make use of your apprenticeship levy funds (in year 2). Year One consists of a pre-ITE programme with support and training to prepare interns for the Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship with QTS in Year Two.

More details, information for prospective candidates and application forms can be found here.

If you do not currently have a member of staff suitable for the programme, but your school would be interested in employing a Teacher Intern next academic year, please get in touch to express your interest as we also interview and place candidates who are not currently employed in a school.

If you have any questions about the programme, you can contact us using the details below.

Your contributions will help to shape the LA’s future strategy around small primary schools which we aim to present to Members at the Children & Young People’s Committee in the autumn.

The event will take place, remotely, on Wednesday, 5 July 2023 between 13:15 and 15:15

Preparing for Adulthood (PFA) - News and Information from the PFA Lead

As Preparing for Adulthood Lead at Cambridgeshire County Council,  I am keen to support our mainstream and area special schools with preparing for adulthood outcomes in employment, independent and community and health (including mental health), for our young people with SEND. As part of that support, I would like to signpost you to some very helpful preparing for adulthood tools and resources for schools and colleges and professionals working with our SEND children and young people: Preparing for Adulthood: All Tools & Resources - NDTi, including Supporting-Planning-Writing-Good-PfA-Outcomes-March-2022.pdf (ndti.org.uk)

As many of you will know, we had our first Preparing for Adulthood Event on 24th March at Burgess Hall, St Ives. The day was fantastic, and we had some wonderful responses from parent carers, such as: ‘We were worried we were coming to a cliff edge- this has reassured me; ‘Great signposting opportunity- no longer feel in the dark!!’; ‘I felt heard and pointed in the right direction for supporting my child. I now have plenty of things I'm going to put in place to help my child grow in confidence and find their way into the adult world’.

From the positive feedback we received from parent carers, we are keen to continue to continue to push ahead the preparing for adulthood message to our parents, to our schools and to our colleges. As part of my role, I can support schools or colleges by coming in and having a chat, or attending a staff session, provide PFA training, or provide signposting opportunities, or responding to e-mail queries/enquiries. Please do pass this message on to staff and I do hope you find this helpful!

Finally, to help with future PFA planning and training, if you have 5 minutes, can you please complete the following survey please: https://forms.office.com/e/9fELdKEyKm

Thank you.
