Dear Reader,

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Schools Webinar Series - spotlight on practical strategies for closing the disadvantage gap

Join the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Schools Webinar Series on Knowledge Hub to access a wealth of free expert webinars and other resources for schools. This series of webinars was originally developed by the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Opportunity Area, in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council, and the resources published here are available to Schools and Early Years settings throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The three webinars led by Jean Gross entitled `Practical strategies for closing the disadvantage gap’ (one focusing on Early Years, one on Primary and one on Secondary) help us to understand which attainment gaps are proving hard to close and explore what we can do to help disadvantaged children make great progress. In these webinars, Jean Gross always pays particular attention to wellbing - helping children to develop social and emotional capabilities.

Access the webinar by clicking `Resources', finding the webinar and clicking the link.

New `one-stop shop- for mental health treatment options

The Anna Freud Centre has launched a new resource, Understanding treatment options, for the Anna Freud Centre's On My Mind youth offer, which aims to empower young people to make informed choices about their own mental health and wellbeing.

This new initiative demonstrates the Anna Freud Centre's ability to bring together evidence-based research, clinical expertise and young people with lived experience, as we deliver on our mission to close the gaps for children's mental health in science, treatments, services, and access to knowledge.

This new resource will aid young people's discussions with their GP, mental health professionals, family members and supportive friends, thereby leading to better outcomes for each young person. We encourage you to share this with pupils as relevant.

Share your views on learning about housing options and related skills

The SEND preparing for adulthood group are looking at how we can make sure that children and young people get the information they need about future housing choices and can develop the skills they will need in this area. We want to find out what is already happening and what people think would be useful so we can develop resources and other activities based on what people tell us. Please share your views in this short questionnaire which will only take 6 minutes.

Opportunity to take part in EEF maths intervention research

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) have commissioned NFER to carry out an evaluation of the effectiveness of 1stClass@Number1 maths intervention. This intervention trains teaching assistants to provide additional maths support to Year 2 pupils. All training materials and resources are provided and the costs will be heavily subsidised. The trial will assess the impact on maths outcomes/attainment for Year 2 children and especially those in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM). Training will take place in the Autumn/Spring terms of 2023/24 at a central Cambridgeshire venue by a Cambs Maths Team accredited trainer. Places are limited. Find out more with this Expression of Interest Form.

Lexia recruitment for primary schools - a letter from Queen's University Belfast

We have been asked to send the following letter from Queen's University Belfast, for the attention of Headteachers, SLT and Literacy leads (KS1):

EEF Funded opportunity to engage in LEXIA reading trial (Year 2)

We are contacting you regarding an opportunity to be involved in a research study funded by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) to test an evidence-based Reading programme, Lexia® CORE5® Reading(Lexia) in primary schools in England.

The trial will assess the impact of Lexia on the reading skills of struggling readers in Year 2, when delivered as a targeted intervention (8-16 pupils per school).

Your school is being approached as it is in an Education Investment Area, which is a priority area for this project.

What will the project look like?

Please see this information sheet for schools to give you a clearer idea of what would be required of you and when. There is also information available on the Lexia website

The project will include 224 primary schools in total, of whom half will be randomly assigned to deliver Lexia (intervention group) and half will be randomly assigned to continue with business-as-usual teaching and reading interventions (control group).

  • Intervention schools will only need to pay £350 including VAT to LexiaUK (to be paid before licence issue) to participate. This represents a discount of 92% as the bulk of the cost will be funded by the EEF.
  • Control schools will receive a payment of £1,000 for their full participation in the trial evaluation requirements.

Next steps to sign up

If you are interested in taking part, please read and complete this memorandum of understanding and return it to us at lexia@qub.ac.uk

We will be recruiting schools as they sign up and we expect a lot of interest for this project. If you match the selection criteria (see information sheet) and return the completed MoU, we will be in touch.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards

Joanne O’KeeffeMaria Cockerill

Five things to consider about online reading interventions

Online reading interventions can improve literacy, but literacy coordinators need to think about a range of factors

The Reading More Wisely study by a Cambridge University team, explores several themes. These include: 1) Personalisation - adapting to individual needs, fostering independence and ownership; 2) Growth mindset and internal locus of control - promoting self-confidence, motivation, and responsibility for progress; 3) Reducing stigma - discreet, personalized learning reduces fear of judgement and encourages engagement; 4) Comprehensive support and training - essential for effective implementation and smooth integration. Overall, the study highlights the potential of online reading interventions to transform reading if carefully chosen and introduced.
