Educate HPV Vaccine Resource Pack

The HPV Education Pack has been co-produced by young people and researchers from the University of Bristol and London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It is aimed at year 8 students before they have the vaccine but could support other years too. It includes lesson plans, video and activity resources as well as frequently asked questions for teachers and meets statutory Health Education requirements to ensure students know about:

  • personal hygiene,
  • germs including bacteria,
  • viruses, how they spread
  • treatment and prevention of infection
  • antibiotics
  • the facts and science relating to immunisation and vaccination.

The resource pack may be particularly useful for areas of low uptake.

It can be accessed via the Healthy Schools website: Relationships and Sex Education - Secondary - Healthy Schools (healthyschoolscp.org.uk)

Stibbington Legacy - Keep supporting your Cambridgeshire Outdoors Centres

After almost forty years promoting environmental education and learning activities for children, the Stibbington centre is closing at the end of the academic year 2022/2023 (September 2023).

However, the fabulous experiences and opportunities that were hosted at Stibbington will not be lost, as Burwell House and Grafham Water Centre work together to ensure the Stibbington Legacy lives on.

For those schools who are looking for day visits or residential experiences then Burwell House will be a great option.  It is a perfect centre hosting just one school at a time residentially and set within three acres of grounds, including many specimen trees, an orchard, meadows, a wildlife pond, and a wide array of sculptures complement the house. The centre is ideally placed to offer a great range of high quality education activities.

Grafham Water Centre, although larger and catering for more than one school at a time, has developed its offer to ensure schools visiting the centre have the same friendly and intimate experience that groups had at Stibbington.  With its surrounding grounds offering woodland, ponds and renewable energy projects it is also ideally placed to offer high quality environmental education.

As well as the residential provision the ever-popular day visits based at Stibbington “WWII Evacuation days and Victorian days” will be relocated to offer a revamped and improved experience for young people. Initially, the centre will be running WWII days from Nene Valley Railway with an exciting new twist to the evacuation day on offer. Stibbington’s other popular courses will soon follow suit with exciting developments. Watch this space or contact Burwell.house@cambridgeshire.gov.uk to find out more.

Please do keep supporting your Centres and if you are interested in hearing more about their provision then please do contact:

Sarah Crocombe, Head of Centre, Burwell House and Stibbington

Teresa Thorp, Head of Centre, Grafham Water Centre

New Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education

The new syllabus will be launched on the 15th June at a conference to be held in Huntingdon and will be available to all schools after that date, on the SACRE websites for each local authority. For any information please contact Amanda Fitton RE Adviser at amanda.fitton@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Transitional protection for Free School Meals (FSM)

The government has announced that the transitional protection for Free School Meals (FSM), due to the roll out of Universal Credit, will continue until March 2025. This means that pupils who are eligible for FSM (1 April 2018 onwards) will continue to receive free school meals, regardless of any change in family circumstances, even if no longer eligible under the low-earnings criteria, up until March 2025.   As this entitlement is ongoing parents do not need to reapply.

Should you have any further queries please contact myself or the Education Welfare Benefits Team at EWB.FSM@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

A Study on Vocabulary Teaching in Schools

readingwise

ReadingWise loves literacy research. In a recent blogpost they explored a study on teaching vocabulary. 3 conclusions from the study:

Firstly, teachers appreciated premade explanations of words and resources. Timesaving is a global issue!

Secondly, time allocation. How much time should we dedicate to explicitly teaching vocabulary? At what cost?

Thirdly, which words? The words you select need to be relevant to your day to day teaching. So – each school may need to select their own sets of words rather than getting an off-the-shelf set.

Willingham Primary School invites you to a Mathematics Mastery learning walk

Willingham Primary School has asked us to share the following with you:

We, here at Willingham Primary School, are delighted to be hosting a learning walk, with Ark Curriculum Plus Mathematics Mastery (MM). We are now in our second year of using the Mathematics Mastery programme across all year groups and have been really impressed with how pupils are improving year on year.

This is a great opportunity to find out more about the MM programme of curriculum-integrated professional development, designed to support schools in developing the teaching of mathematics. The information session will be facilitated by a member of MM staff and we will also be on hand to tell you about our school’s journey with MM over the years, including both the challenges and successes.

This year, the DfE, through the EEF, really want to help scale up Mathematics Mastery primary and reach as many schools as possible based on the proven impact from their 2014 study which saw on average an additional 2 months’ progress for pupils in KS1. To incentivise schools to become part of MM, they are offering an 80% subsidy on the cost of their KS1 Tailored package, meaning a school can sign up their whole school for just under £3000.

Full details of the event are:

Date:              Tuesday 21st March 2023

Time:               9.15 – 11.30 AM

Location:         Willingham Primary School, Thodays Close, Willingham. CB24 5LE

Book your place here

Please book your place early to avoid disappointment. Maximum of two attendees per school.

Full details on the Primary programme can be found here. Their team are also always happy to have a conversation, so please get in touch directly on 020 3116 6363 or email at partnerships@arkcurriculumplus.org.uk.

Please do come along and find out if Mathematics Mastery is also the right fit for your school where you can build on, develop and embed a coherent, effective approach to maths teaching.
