Dear Reader,

A message from Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel De Souza - Big Summer Survey

The Big Summer Survey will provide new insights into children’s views on family, and will be an opportunity to hear from children about how they have spent their summer holidays. On the Children’s Commissioner’s website, you can also find a lesson plan, activity pack, FAQs, and child-friendly version of Family and its Protective Effect: Part 1 of the Independent Family Review to guide schools in how they can discuss family life with pupils as part of the curriculum.

Please encourage children to take part in this survey. It's open until Monday 17 October and I would love to hear the voices of children from all parts of the country.

National Child Measurement Programme results letter - feedback from families

Colleagues in the public health team are seeking feedback from local families on wording for the NCMP results letters. These are the letters families receive after their child has been weighed/measured as part of the national child measurement and can be a sensitive area - especially for those whose child has been identified as overweight/very overweight. We are kindly asking Primary Schools to share the below message with their parents and thank you in advance:

Are you a parent with a child who is primary school aged or below? Has your child taken part in the National Child Measurement Programme in recent years? Your local authority public health team would like your opinion about the letter sent to parents following their child being measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP). Your opinion really matters, and will help us to make sure the wording of these letters is sensitive whilst still delivering the right level of information. Please take 5 minutes to answer the short survey here: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/UZTGBK/

World Mental Health Day - 10th October 2022

world mental health day 22

World Mental Health Day takes place on 10 October, and this year's theme set by the World Health Organisation is, "'make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority".

Sometimes when we consider something globally, it can seem too much of an undertaking. But given that we all have mental health, given that our mental health and our physical health is inextricably linked, we do all have to consider what part we can play.

Here are some simple actions you could take:

  • Share this article with your staff/colleagues and remind them about your school/setting Employee Assist Programme and Mental Health First Aiders.
  • Reach out for help for yourself. Use www.hubofhope.co.uk to find support using search functions of location and concern. There is even a search function which filters adult / young person support.
  • Reach in to help someone else. Open a conversation with someone at work, allowing time and space for them to talk about they are feeling at the moment.

Primary Safer Spaces Toolkit

You are invited to attend a FREE briefing (11th October 2022 3.45 - 4.45 pm) on a new resource developed to support primary schools. The Primary Safer Spaces Toolkit is intended to be used in addition to planned PSHE lessons to deepen children’s understanding of sexist language, attitudes and behaviours and their consequences. It also aims to enable them to practise challenging these attitudes, seeking help from trusted adults, sustaining safe environments and building healthy relationships with their peers based on mutual respect and trust.

All primaries in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are invited to sign up to the briefing, to attend or receive a recording, and receive the resource.

This work is being led jointly by PSHE Service, Education Safeguarding Team and C&P Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Partnership. Cathy.murphy@cambridgeshire.gov.uk sara.rogers@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Please sign up to the briefing and to receive your copy of the resource here.

Outdoor Learning

outdoor learning

With the winter nights and months approaching, it's easy for us to spend more time indoors with our children. It's warm and cosy, but it's great being outdoors too.   There are huge benefits to children spending time outside, learning about the changing seasons and the environment around them.  Grafham Water Centre offers a huge range of outdoor learning activities for the children to become involved in, such as hot chocolate over the camp fire, learning to build shelters outside in a safe but fun environment, and also map reading putting their orienteering skills to the test.

Fresh air is not only great for the children but for us adults too. Call the centre and chat about what they can offer your school this winter time.  Before you know it, Spring will be upon us again!

National Play Day at Wisbech Adventure Playground

wap play day 22

Staff and volunteers at Wisbech Adventure Playground hosted National Play Day on Wednesday 3rd August to celebrate children’s play. Families in the local community enjoyed various activities such as a tombola, glitter tattoos, henna, a live Caribbean steel band and much more. Stall holders hailed from the Wisbech Child and Family Centres, Cambridgeshire Libraries, Wisbech Fenland Museum, Market Place and many more.
