Dear Reader,

Tackling Loneliness Together

mental health awareness

Being alone is the physical state of not being with another individual, might it be human or animal. Being lonely is a psychological state characterised by a distressing experience occurring when one’s social relationships are (self-)perceived to be less in quantity and quality than desired. [Eglantine Julle-Daniere  Writing in Psychology Today: Being alone vs being lonely]

‘I’m the only one in my school who has my role – It’s a lonely position and no one else can really understand what I have to do.’

‘I sit at my dinner table with my partner and children and feel lonely.’

‘The staffroom is now full of people but everyone is so busy, I’m sure no one has got time to listen to me and my worries; so I smile, make a cuppa and just get on.’

It is on the basis of my role as an Adult Mental Health First Aider that I know it is more than possible to be surrounded by people at home or in the work environment and yet feel lonely. I listen to school staff every week who share with me their thoughts, sometimes of feeling isolated and lonely. And it is a simple human connection with non-judgemental listening along with that precious commodity of time which can genuinely help and support.

Tackling loneliness for the adults in our schools involves everyone reaching in to others to offer support as well as people reaching out for support. Enhance the training of any Senior Mental Health Leader, Staff well-being Leader and other interested staff if you can  - or simply try scanning through the Take 10 Together  · MHFA England resources to know how to open a well-being conversation.

About us

Pension Auto Enrolment

In line with the pension legislation, Cambridgeshire County Council is required to re-assess and enrol employees into a qualifying pension scheme this year as it has been three years since the last automatic pension enrolment took place for all Cambridgeshire County Council employees.  The Council has selected a re-enrolment date of 1st June 2022 which means all maintained schools now need to work with their payroll provider to undertake the process as outlined in this briefing to ensure anyone that meets the qualifying criteria is auto-enrolled into the relevant pension scheme (TPS or LGPS).  Once this process has been completed schools (or their payroll provider) must complete and return by 30th June 2022 this spreadsheet  to HR.Advisory@Cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

2022-23 Schools Term Dates, 5 Professional Development Days and School Start/Finish Times – Annual Cambridgeshire Survey

Please let us know the dates your school has scheduled the 5 teacher training/professional days that are available to be taken at schools’ discretion during Academic Year 2022/23. We request this information from schools annually so that Cambridgeshire Services can plan support and provision for schools, pupils, parents, and carers accordingly. Please also let us know your school start/finish times for September 2022. This information is requested in response to the recent government white paper - Opportunity for all: strong schools with great teachers for your child, that sets an expectation for all state-funded mainstream schools to deliver a minimum length of school week of 32.5 hours as soon as they can, and from September 2023 at the latest. Please send us the dates and times for your school by completion of the following online survey by 5PM Friday 27th May 2022.

New ECTs can be added from 10th May 2022. For more information about how to do this go to our website. We would recommend that you start this process after half term, June 6th onwards as many of you will be recruiting following the final resignation window for teachers. A letter has recently been sent from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub explaining the process for those new to ECF and those who already have ECTS this year.  Copies of the letter can be found on our ECF page ( at the bottom).  Please contact us if you have any questions. Jfrench@CPTSHN.co.uk or Lynne.Birch@CPTSHN.co.uk.

Could your students help to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee?

As part of Cambridgeshire County Day’s Jubilee celebrations, primary schools in Cambridgeshire are invited to sing a specially written song for the occasion. Written by Sir Richard Stilgoe, The Jubilee Song celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne and service to the country. If your school would like to get involved, you can access the lyrics and music for the song here. Then simply record your submission and send the file over to cambscountyday@youngtechacademy.co.uk, ideally before 23rd June, the day the Cambridgeshire County Day is taking place. The submissions will be turned into a compilation, in the hopes of raising money for a new children’s hospital in Cambridge. Any questions, contact Anne Bailey at abailey@formthefuture.org.uk.

Support for students leaving school this summer

Through the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Region of Learning, Form the Future can provide personal development and employment support for school leavers. If you have students in Years 11-13 who could benefit from support to help them take their next steps in education or employment, please email Fernanda Novaes at fnovaes@formthefuture.org.uk.  We want to reach these students before they sit their exams, in order to provide them with as much support as possible at a critical moment in their journey including during the summer when they get their results. We ask that referrals for students in these year groups are made prior to their exam periods. To find out more about the support on offer, click here.

Tackling mental health inequalities in primary schools

The Branching Out research explores how arts in nature experiences can reach more children by using volunteers as ‘Community Artscapers’ in order to tackle mental health inequalities in schools.

The research is led by Professor Nicola Walshe and funded under the UK Research and Innovation ‘Scale up health inequality prevention and intervention strategies’ fund.

We are looking for primary school staff to participate in a survey to inform the delivery of Branching Out as it develops to make sure it works for you. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes and closes midnight Wednesday 18th May. Thank you. Contact: anna.dadswell@aru.ac.uk

Have you employed an early career teacher (ECT) who will start induction in September 2022?

ECTs cannot start their induction until they have been registered with the ECT Induction Service (acting as Appropriate Body). Please find here details of the statutory service we provide.

Statutory ECT induction is now a two year process and as well as registering ECTs with an Appropriate Body, schools must also ensure that ECTs are accessing an Early Career Framework PD programme. Please read our updated FAQs for further details of the changes to the ECT induction process, the options for delivering an Early Career Framework PD programme and the steps needed to register a new ECT. We welcome all ECT registrations, regardless of the Early Career Framework PD programme the school has chosen.

The ECT Induction Service is running update briefings via zoom for Headteachers and Induction Leads in June. These briefings are free of charge for all schools with current ECTs registered with us or schools who will have an ECT registered with us in September. Places can be booked here.

The briefing will:

  • act as an introduction or a refresher to the changes to the statutory induction process
  • clarify roles, responsibilities and statutory entitlements
  • explain the options for delivering an Early Career Framework PD programme
  • provide important 2022 updates about changes to the DfE early career teacher portal, the transition from ECT year 1 to year 2 and the ECF PD programme delivered by the local Teaching School Hub.
  • provide an opportunity to ask questions

Brand new Induction Tutors and Induction Leads should attend the half day course ‘Essential training for new Induction Tutors/Leads’. This course is free of charge for all schools with current ECTs registered with us or who will have ECTs registered with the ECT Induction Service in September. Further details and available dates can be found on our booking page here.

If you have any queries about the ECT Induction process please contact:

Direct request from the Children's Commissioner

Family is a core pillar of my work as Children’s Commissioner following what I heard in ‘The Big Ask’, the largest-ever survey of children. This survey demonstrated how important families are to children. Children explained how having a supportive family has a positive impact on their lives – from receiving emotional support, to being able to talk with family members about their worries and aspirations for the future.

That is why it is great to have the opportunity to explore this work further, in the Family Review which Government has commissioned me to do. This Review will hear directly from children and families and seek to understand the composition of the modern family. It will explore how communities and services provide for families and what can be done to improve these further.

Capturing children’s voices is key to this Review. So, I am launching my ‘Call for Action’ to hear from children. I am asking schools for their help with this by promoting the survey, which involves two short questions that allow children to share their view on family life.

I am also aware that many organisations are doing important work in this space. I am therefore also launching my ‘Call for Evidence’, where I welcome evidence regarding all aspects of modern family life, support systems, and the pressures facing families.

Henry Morris Centenary Conference: Thursday 30 June 2022, 4.45 to 7.30

The Conference is being held at Bottisham Village College.

The event will bring together a wide group of people: Head teachers and school staff; politicians; council officers; academics and people who have benefited from Henry's legacy in different ways and who have an interest in education and the community.

It is a free event and further details are available here, including a link to book tickets via the 'Eventbrite' website.

Attendance Service - feedback needed

During the pandemic we as an Attendance Service have changed our ways of working and have been operating as a virtual service, this has enabled us to expand on our offer of support through increasing our Non School Attendance helpline and introducing webinars.  We are already thinking creatively about how we can support schools next academic year and improve our service. We would really appreciate it if you could spare 15 minutes of your time to complete our online smart survey, the feedback received will help us to shape our service level offer and reflect on areas of support you feel are important.

https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/LAAttendanceServiceApril2022/

The survey closes at midnight on the 20/05/2022.

Thank You.
