Learn Together  |  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the last Cambridgeshire newsletter of this term.  The Spring term has gone so fast yet been so tiring and long!  I think we are moving into an unprecedented period of change with the White Paper on Education and Green Paper on SEND reform due any day.  Covid is still with us and is not to be underestimated.  You continue to do amazing things balancing all these pressures and delivering a rich education for all our children and young people.  I am very grateful for all your hard work and dedication.  At the end of each term, it is with sadness we say goodbye to so many colleagues who have dedicated so much time and effort to the Children and Young People of Cambridgeshire.  Good luck in the future and you are welcome back any time.

Have a great Easter break when it arrives and make sure your rest up!

Jonathan Lewis

Young Carers Webinar

Young carers are children and young people under the age of 18 who provide care, assistance or support to another family member who is disabled, physically or mentally ill, or has a substance misuse problem.

With the number of young carers increasing its important that schools are able to both identify and support to ensure regular access to education. A study conducted by Carers Trust in 2018 identified that around 39% of young carers stated nobody in the school was aware of their young carers status.

Being a young carer can have an impact on attendance with around 27% of young carers (aged 11–15) missing school or experiencing educational difficulties (Dearden, C, Becker, S, 2004). It was also found that being a young carer can significantly lower educational attainment at GCSE level – the difference between nine Cs and nine Ds (The Children’s Society, 2013).

To help schools ensure positive attendance and effective early intervention the Attendance Service is working together with Centre 33 to provide a free webinar to all schools. The Webinar will include requirements from schools in supporting the young people who have been identified as providing care to a family member, which may be a barrier to education. As well as how to monitor attendance and appropriate early intervention, all of which will be expected before referring to the Attendance Service for legal sanctions.

Our growing numbers of young cares need our support, book your place at the webinar by clicking here.

All secondary schools in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are invited to participate in the Health Related Behaviour Survey in June/July 2022 with Y8 and Y10. The survey is funded by Public Health. Participating in the survey offers many benefits to schools including:

Henry Morris Conference - Thursday 30 June 2022

Henry Morris

100 years ago, Henry Morris became Director of Education for Cambridgeshire and began an educational revolution that would have an impact around the country and abroad.

To mark the centenary, the Henry Morris Memorial Trust will be organising a conference to be held at Bottisham Village College on Thursday 30th June, 16:45 to 19:30.

The aims of the conference are to (briefly) mark the centenary and then to examine the relevance of Henry Morris's philosophy and values today. Henry's legacy is important, but the event will focus more on schools contributing to a future with 'education from the cradle to the grave'.

The event will be free but delegates will need to book a place using Eventbrite. More information on the conference programme and how to book will follow shortly.
