Local Government Pension Scheme Correspondence re McCloud Data Remedy

We are aware schools have been contacted by LGPS to undertake data checking following the outcome of the McCloud court case which focused on age discrimination in pension schemes following changes to how the scheme calculated pension benefits from 1st April 2014.  The outcome of this court case means the pension records for anyone that was a scheme member on 31 March 2012 has to be checked to determine if their pension benefit would be higher if it was calculated under the old scheme rules or when calculated under the new scheme rules.  To be able to implement the McCloud remedy colleagues in LGPS need to ensure the information they hold on hours worked and salary details for all eligible employees is accurate and this is why you have been asked to check and verify the data you have been sent.  We are aware that EPM are not able to support to their client schools to respond on their behalf to LGPS but they are providing reports of data to help with the response.  LGPS have worked with EPM to clarify what information is needed and there will be communication from LGPS confirming an extension to the deadline for this process to be completed.  We realise this adds an additional unexpected demand on schools but it is important to ensure the accuracy of this data as it is an employer duty and any impact from inaccurate data would fall on the employer, either through the valuation/contribution rate setting process (if incorrect data is not corrected), or through the recovery of costs if the Fund has to recalculate benefits due to incorrect data.  Thank you in advance for supporting LGPS with this challenging process.

Cambridgeshire Paid Teacher Internship

The schools recruitment team at Cambridgeshire County Council are now inviting applications for the Cambridgeshire Paid Teacher Internship. You might like to consider this route to QTS for members of support staff who have the potential to be great teachers and would benefit from a salaried training programme over the course of two years. The programme enables you to retain and develop excellent staff members, grow your own teachers and make use of your apprenticeship levy funds (in year 2).

Prospective candidates must have at least (or have completed by the end of year 1), the following :

  • A degree (for secondary, the degree should be relevant to the subject they want to teach)
  • A GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics and English (and in Science for primary teaching)

More details, information for prospective candidates and application forms can be found here.

If you do not currently have a member of staff suitable for the programme, but your school would be interested in employing a Teacher Intern next academic year, please get in touch to express your interest as we also interview and place candidates who are not currently employed in a school.

If you have any questions about the programme you can contact us using the details below.

Reception cohort 2022/23 intake

Further to the pupil roll forecasts, sent to schools in December 2021, and feedback from schools, the 0-19 Place Planning Team has been asked to provide some context on the countywide picture.  Schools will be aware soon of the preferences for their September 2022 Reception intake following the first admissions round which closed on 15 January and some may have concerns about low numbers of preferences.

The Council’s Research Team has provided the following contextual commentary.

“The lower numbers of 4 year olds are the result of the overall trends of generally falling birth rates and births that have been seen in Cambridgeshire over the last five years (reflecting national trends), as illustrated in the Chart which shows the number of births by calendar year supplied by the Government’s Office for National Statistics (ONS). September 2022’s intake of 4 year olds comprises those babies born in 2017 and 2018 - there was a notable drop in the number of annual births between 2016 and 2017. Based on current trends, we would therefore expect intakes of 3 / 4 year olds to continue to fluctuate at lower levels, and as seen this year, in the short term.“

If schools do have concerns about falling rolls, they are welcome to contact the 0-19 Place Planning Team, placeplanningreferrals0-19@cambridgeshire.gov.uk, to discuss their situation.

Wisbech Adventure Playground hosted a viewing of the much loved family film, the Polar Express. This was arranged for a maximum of 30 people for families with children aged 0-11 years. Viewings were held on two nights to allow different families to attend and come dressed in their pyjamas. During the film’s well-known ‘Hot Chocolate’ scene, staff, who were dressed as waiters, handed out hot chocolate and cookies to delighted families. At the close of the film, Santa Claus arrived with his Elf helper to give each child a present and a sleigh-bell. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Teaching resources to support the PHE Better Health Campaign

food smart logo

As part of the new childhood nutrition campaign from Better Health, Public Health England has just launched a new NHS Food Scanner App to help students and their families explore what is in their food and drink in an interactive and fun way, enabling them to make healthier swaps and choices.

A range of curriculum linked teaching resources are also available on School Zone including an activities toolkitassembly, sharing with families toolkit , leaderboard print-outs as well as take-home leaflets to give to students.

At a local level, the funded Food Smart programme also supports the aim of the Better Health campaign to inspire students to adopt healthier habits for life.

As part of the wider Healthy Schools initiative, Food Smart has provided healthy eating and nutrition education to primary schools across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough over the last 3 years. This provision has now been extended to secondary schools and includes the offer of free consultancy with ProVeg UK which works in support of school caterers to implement simple menu changes to encourage more sustainable and healthier food choices.

Food Smart comprises of many elements including assemblies (virtual as well as in person), lesson plans and resources (KS1 – 3), workshop sessions for both students and parents, teacher training opportunities as well as links to local businesses and food related networks.

The Food Smart offer continues to be shaped by the feedback received from schools to ensure it evolves and remains relevant to the needs that are emerging locally.

The Raisin Project

The Raisin Awareness Project offers a whole school approach to promoting Oral Health covering many aspects as suggested in the NICE pathway Improving oral health in primary schools, in addition to the resources available on the Healthy Schools Oral Health page.

Awesome Oral Health CIC, a not-for-profit company, has been set up to run the programme linking primary schools with dental practices, requiring minimal time and expense but maximum impact for both. The Raisin Awareness project is made up of 3 components with the overall aim of helping to reduce the risk of tooth decay in Primary school children, while simultaneously aiding schools to meet the required standards.

1) Raisin Swap for tooth-friendly vegetables (to replace SFVS dried fruit 6x year)

2) Support for school and families to review whole school snack policies

3) Regular Oral Health Literature (sharing key dental messages from the evidenced-based Delivering Better Oral Health toolkit in a fun child-friendly format)

It’s easy and simple to get involved, and the project has been designed with your limited time resources in mind. You can register your interest on the website and read more: www.awesome-oral-health.com where further details are available, or email directly if you have any questions or to chat about the project: info@awesome-oral-health.com
