Dear Reader,

Early Career Teacher (ECT) and Mentor Logins for the Early Career Framework (ECF) Online System - Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub (CPTSH)

We are delighted to have 340 ECTs and 293 Mentors joining our ECF programme with our delivery partner Education Development Trust (EDT) this month.  As with all new programmes there are some wrinkles and we’d like to make sure all schools know how to iron them out. Listed below is important information for any school experiencing problems with accessing the programme:

  • All ECTs and Mentors should now be registered with the DfE – the final date for registration of applicants is 31st October 2021. If you have yet to register a September starter/Mentor please try and do so by the end of this month to ensure they can attend their autumn face to face sessions and keep up with the training programme. If you recruit an ECT after this date you need to contact the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub (CPTSH), for more information.
  • If your ECTs or Mentors have not received a login please ask your school Induction Tutor to check the status of their registration on the DfE portal to ensure that verification has been given and chase any outstanding information. Top tip: accuracy of email addresses is very important and can cause delays!
  • Once verified, details of individuals will pass through to CPTSH’s provider, EDT, who will issue an automated email with login details to allow access to their online learning platform. The link to the platform is here.
  • ECTs and Mentors should ‘sign up’ for one of the Term 1 Local Group Sessions under the guidance of their Induction Tutor who will have an overview of their School or Trust’s requirements. If individuals have difficulties with accessing the online platform please contact EDT directly, using the following Link: teacherPDhelp@educationdevelopmenttrust.com

Many Thanks, Lynne Birch (CPSTH Lead) and Julia French ( CPTSH Administrator)

Recruiting foster carers now in your area

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fostering Service is looking for foster carers to support children and young people. People who are empathetic, caring, resilient and open minded are needed.

Enquiries are welcomed from people who wish to foster for Cambridgeshire County Council or Peterborough City Council. Carers foster on a self-employed basis with allowances paid whilst a child/young person is in their care. This is an opportunity to support children and young people in your home while receiving support, training and development from the respective Local Authority.

The service offers:

  • Generous mileage allowance, a setting up fee for furniture and equipment, two weeks’ additional basic maintenance payments for holidays, birthdays allowance, a festivities allowance, initial clothing, and school uniform allowance.
  • To help you feel reassured round the clock ‘out of hours’ support is provided should you need it.
  • A dedicated supervising social worker who will provide regular supervision and support.

There are lots of different types of fostering available for the right people and their families. Enthusiasm and commitment to support the needs of children and young people in care is needed as well as having a spare bedroom and being over 21. There is an urgent need for people to help support teenagers, sibling groups and children with disabilities.

Did you know - as a foster carer you could earn up to £44,720 + benefits for looking after 2 children who are 11+ subject to experience, training, and your assessment.

Register online at : www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/fostering or www.peterborough.gov.uk.fostering text FOSTERING to 60777 or call us on 0800 052 0078.

Mathematical Problem Solving

What does mathematical problem-solving look like in your school? Since the pandemic began, many teachers have reported that pupils’ problem-solving skills and confidence levels have declined, and we have found that staff are often least confident with this area of maths. Over the last two terms, we have been running a problem-solving project with schools from across the county, with the aims of empowering teachers, improving pupils’ experiences and outcomes, and sharing good practice. As teachers have increased the frequency of open-ended problem-solving opportunities and carefully considered both how to scaffold and extend activities, pupils have begun to demonstrate greater independence and success with problem-solving. Would your staff benefit from support in this area?

Opportunity Area Year 5 Offer

opportunity area

The Opportunity Area (OA) has put together a Year 5 Offer Summary detailing all of the offers and initiatives available to schools and Early Years settings in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire this year. We hope these offers will be valuable to your schools, so please take a look at the document and share it with your colleagues. Please note that the OA Webinar Series is also available to all schools and settings in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, West Norfolk and Kings Lynn. Some projects are also available to schools and settings in Peterborough – see the ‘Twinning with Peterborough’ section for more details.

Cambridgeshire Steps

Cambridgeshire Steps is a therapeutic thinking and trauma-informed approach to positive behaviour management for all educational settings (mainstream, special, early years, primary, secondary and further education), grounded in evidence-based research, and founded on the ethos that, “You can’t teach children to behave better by making them feel worse. When children feel better, they behave better,” (Pam Leo). It is the preferred approach to behaviour management within Cambridgeshire.

The Cambridgeshire Steps methodology prioritises the feelings and thoughts behind behaviour and considers the effect it has on all individuals’ experiences and emotions within a group of people. Comprehending and working with this results in long-term change of behaviour, rather than suppressing or punishing it. It assists in a review of current school policies on general behaviour management, physical touch and the management of children with complex behavioural needs.

The Cambridgeshire Steps approach works best when all staff have an understanding of the ethos and language involved, supported by senior management, policies and plans. Preferably at least two tutors per setting should attend training, one of which should ideally be the Headteacher; implementing and embedding Steps requires in many cases a whole-school ethos and culture change and should be led from the top. See `Training and Events' section below to book onto Steps training.

Further information can be found on the Learn Together Cambridgeshire Steps page or contact Jacquie Woodcock, Cambridgeshire Steps and Trauma Informed Lead for more details.

Congratulations to Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge Finishers!

Over 4,500 children took part in this year’s Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge in their local library and online. To date over 2,100 have completed. We hope that by taking part in our libraries’ fun reading activities children have been able to catch-up on their reading this summer. Library Staff are currently presenting the ‘library-based finishers’ with their Medal and Certificate, though sadly few of our libraries are able to host the usually Award Ceremonies. If it is possible to acknowledge your children’s achievement in a school assembly this would be much appreciated.

The Queen's Green Canopy

the Queen's Green Canopy

Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council are taking part in a UK-wide tree planting initiative called The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) which will celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and create a lasting legacy for the monarch.

The unique scheme involves inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee,” with everyone encouraged to plant trees from October - when the tree planting season begins - through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

Both councils are working to identify sites across our estates where larger scale planting projects can take place, and we are working with residents, groups, schools, businesses and other partners to encourage and support their participation.

As part of this, it would be great if parish councils could encourage participation in the initiative.

Everyone is invited to take part and it is easy to get involved – whether you are an expert gardener or complete novice there is something you can do. This ranges from individuals planting trees on their private land, community planting projects, schools planting trees on their premises and businesses setting up tree planting projects with employees.

There is plenty of help and advice available - including what types of trees to plant and how to look after them - at https://queensgreencanopy.org/ and https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/queensgreencanopy

The Woodland Trust is an official project partner and can support any school or community project - https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/schools-and-communities/.

The councils are also encouraging the use of sustainable tree guards for planting projects rather than traditional plastic guards which have a negative impact on the environment. You can find out more at https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/about-us/what-we-do/research-and-evidence/plastic-tree-guards/.

A national map https://queensgreencanopy.org/map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/  will be hosted on the national QGC website where you can add your planting project and view the contribution being made across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

People taking part in the project can highlight their efforts and encourage other contributions on social media via the hashtags #PlantATreeForTheJubilee and #QueensGreenCanopy.

Domestic abuse book for schools

A children’s author’s new book with a background story around coping with domestic abuse at home is to be provided to every primary school across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Cambridge writer and illustrator Pam Smy’s latest story, The Hideaway, focuses on a child who runs away from home as he cannot bear the domestic abuse taking place between his mother and step-father.

The storyline was supported by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Domestic Abuse & Sexual Violence Partnership which has agreed a deal to offer a hardback copy of the book to all primary schools across the county, as well as all libraries. Cllr Bryony Goodliffe, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Children and Young People Committee, said: “It is heartbreaking that many children will witness domestic abuse, which is why it’s so important to raise awareness of the issue.

“By making sure every child receives a copy of The Hideaway it will allow them to understand about domestic abuse and its serious impact in a safe environment.”

Cllr Lynne Ayres, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, education, skills and the university, said: “Domestic abuse is a largely hidden crime which can have a devastating impact on all family members, so it is a good thing we can raise awareness of it in a safe setting.”

Pam is available to give talks about making the book, the illustrations and the ideas, while she can also run writing and drawing workshops around the themes in the book.

Any school interested in a visit from Pam is asked to email amanda.warburton@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

Grafham News

With Autumn now in full swing and sunny days still present, now is the time to think about still getting outside before winter weather sets in..

Learning outside the classroom has proved and is still extremely popular with a lot of teachers and schools, especially in these Covid times, being outside is the safest place to be for our children, they get to be outside in fresh air, and move and get more physical exercise, as well as learning to work together with their classmates.

Grafham Water centre would love to welcome more Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Schools this Autumn and Winter term, please contact Ali Butler-Baines for more information on what different activities they can offer, and even overnight stays.   Perhaps even get to toast those marshmallows over the camp fire!

Making Connections

Although surrounded by people in schools/settings, it is still possible for staff to feel alone. Although our friends and family may appear on the outside to be successful or ‘happy’ or fortunate, their feelings may be otherwise. Although you may be ‘the strong one/ the one who always copes’ this doesn’t preclude you from having thoughts of worthlessness or suicide.

There are things you can do for others:

  • Taking half a day to learn about the importance of making connections and having open conversations, could help to keep someone safe from suicide. Places remain on the online Suicide First Aid lite course on 7th October [afternoon]. Book via School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com) [Mental Health tab]
  • The full range of Adult Mental Health First Aid courses are available throughout the academic year and can be booked via School Improvement Service online calendar (bookingbug.com) [Mental Health tab]. Like Safeguarding roles, it is wise to have at least a couple of staff trained within an organisation.
  • Take a peek at the Take Ten Together Toolkit [you can receive training on this during an Adult Mental Health Awareness course] which is free to access at Take 10 Together  · MHFA England

There are things you can do for yourself:

  • Speaking to a Mental Health First Aider, your GP or to your Employee Assistance Programme, can be the gateway to you accessing support.
  • Pause…even if just for five minutes at a time. Working harder and for longer does not necessarily mean more will be achieved; rest is something we all need [not that we deserve].
  • Visit Hub of Hope - Mental Health Support Network provided by Chasing the Stigma for support and services local to you.
