Holiday Activity and Food Programme (HAF) - Easter 2021

The Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) Programme will be delivered across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough from Easter 2021. The project is aimed at providing healthy food and enriching activities for children in receipt of free school meals. One week of provision will be offered over Easter (for the equivalent of at least four hours a day, four days a week), four weeks will be offered during the Summer Holidays, and there will be a further week of provision over Christmas. Schools are in the ideal position to identify which children in receipt of free school meals would benefit most from participating in this programme. Registered Holiday Scheme Providers and Childminders have been contacted and are currently signing up, allowing us to build a directory of providers. We will be providing schools with this and a template letter for the parents of economically eligible children. Due to a limited number of places being available, especially over Easter, this is not a universal offer. Whilst this scheme is for the benefit of all children in receipt of free school meals and you should share this information with parents, we suggest targeting the most vulnerable children. For more information, please contact the programme teams on: HAF@cambridgeshire.gov.uk (CCC) or HAF@peterborough.gov.uk (PCC).  Please also let us know if you have a provider you work with who would like to participate in the programme.

More information available here on the Learn Together website.

Cambridgeshire Waste Management Service

The main aim of the waste education programme is to encourage Cambridgeshire residents to reduce the amount of household waste currently going to landfill. A key audience is primary school aged children and their family members. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by teaching children to recycle, re-use, repair waste items instead.  The service which is FREE, also works with children and the wider community to encourage  the responsible disposal of waste; washing & squashing recycled waste, and safe disposal of batteries being two examples.

Prior to the COVID restrictions around 100 school and visits to the waste education centre were conducted per year but, since March of last year, all visits have been suspended. The service has now produced online resources for schools and the children they teach.  Lessons which can be delivered remotely have also been developed along with an education hub.

With the current COVID restrictions regarding school visits due to be lifted in May it is envisaged school visits will be able to commence after the May half term.

The Waste Management Service is offering these resources to schools throughout Cambridgeshire to encourage you to participate in the remote recycling workshops and assemblies on offer.

For more information on virtual and school visits please contact Jon Crisp (Waste Education Officer, Waste Management Service).

Mobile: 07795052043 or Email: jonathan.crisp@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing

Our physical and mental health is inextricably linked.

In this regular feature, some ideas to support and signpost will be shared in the hope that you may benefit or you may be able to help others.

Support

Based on the 10 Keys to Happier Living [www.actionforhappiness.org], a little and often approach to self-care and wellbeing may be more manageable, achievable and realistic for school staff. The eighth key is Resilience; give it a go by carefully considering your optimum time in the day/week for working and then follow that direction eg if you work well at the start of the day, try to avoid more complicated/ demanding work at the end of the day.

Signposting

The GP is able to look for signs and symptoms around a person’s whole health - physical and mental - making links if appropriate and referring on to more specialised support.

It will cover tips on writing a good, holistic assessment and the role of the Lead Point of contact. The course facilitators welcome questions and interactions throughout the training which is delivered in a friendly and welcoming manner. Professionals who wish to refresh themselves on the process or are new to Early Help are warmly welcomed to attend.
