Census 2021: secondary school education programme and resources

The next England and Wales Census is being held this year, with Census day on 21st March. The census only happens once every 10 years, and is run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This time, the ONS is running a free secondary education programme on Census 2021 to which I would encourage you to sign up your school.

The Secondary Education Programme provides teachers access to free school and lesson content designed to bring the census to life for students. Curriculum-linked lesson plans and flexible activities are available to download, and can be taught in the classroom or online. The lessons feature real-life examples to help students understand the power of data to tell stories, and there are resources for PSHE, maths, history, geography and citizenship. Students can find out how census information is used and how it can help them understand their local area.

Visit https://censuseducation.org.uk/ to sign your school up.

Teaching our students about the Census and why it’s important that we all take part will help get the word out in our wider school community. Encouraging as many of our households as possible to complete the Census is really important, so that we are able to provide the services that our communities need.

Early Help: Access to the Early Help Module

In January 2020, Cambridgeshire County Council moved to a new online recording system called Liquid Logic – Early Help Module (EHM).

We have been delighted with the way in which partners have embraced the change and in the first year of implementation have over 1000 professionals in partner agencies who are registered to use the system across Cambridgeshire. There is a range of materials that have been created to support professionals with using the system effectively including:

  1. Quick guides providing step by step instructions with images. These are accessible to users once logged into the Live EHM system.
  2. Web guidance available here
  3. An online portal called the Firmstep EHM Helpdesk Portal to get technical support and log issues with the EHM system.
  4. EHM District link roles in each Early Help teams, to deliver local virtual webinars and support the use of the quick guides.
  5. Termly EHM newsletters sent to every registered user of EHM with frequently asked questions, updates on changes to the system, and other useful information.

We are phasing out the use of paper Early Help Assessment’s (EHA's) and hope to be receiving all EHA's electronically on EHM by 1st April 2021. The use of EHM will enable greater sharing of information across agencies and will provide the opportunity for all services providing support to contribute to the shared record.

To gain access to the EHM system, you first need to complete the Firmstep Registration process and EHM online training. Further information and support are available on our website via this link; speaking with your EHM District Link; or by calling the Early Help Hub on 01480 376 666.

New Shire Hall Time Capsule for 2046

A time capsule giving a vision of Cambridgeshire in 2021 and people’s hopes for future years is being buried by Chairman Cllr Mac McGuire on Monday 22 March.

Pupils are being given the opportunity to fill in a postcard describing life today in 10 words and then a sentence about what they hope they will be doing in 25 years.

The capsule will be buried in the staff seating area outside of the new civic headquarters with an engraved slab marking its position.

Staff, schoolchildren, and council members are all being asked to fill in a postcard to give a vision of life in 2021 and what they would like to see in the future. The aim is that there should be a ceremony in 2046, 25 years after the time-capsule has been buried.

If pupils would like to take part in the project, they can fill in the postcard

Would you like a Primary Teacher Apprentice for next year?

We have four Teacher Apprentices keen to undertake their training, starting this year.  Do you have a vacancy coming up that an apprentice could undertake for you?  There is an incentive for schools employing new apprentices until September this year. It's £3000 that you could use towards salary.  If you’d like to find out more about our candidates or about the Teacher Apprenticeship please contact us at schools.recruitment@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or 01480 379 775/07920 806803.

Childminding News from PACEY

Please could you share the following information with parents. PACEY is a commissioned partner with the Early Years Service of Cambridgeshire County Council, and supports all childminders in the County. Part of our role is to recruit new childminders. Childminders have always worked really well with schools in Cambridgeshire, and these partnerships have been invaluable to support parents and children, none more so than in the last 12 months. This information on the Childminding page on the Learn Together website gives the details of what it takes to be a successful childminder, and also some quotes from existing childminders about the benefits of running their own business and working from home:

If you have any questions you can contact me by email or on 07917 352010.

Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health is about more than the absence of mental illness.

In this regular feature, some ideas to support and signpost will be shared in the hope that you may benefit or you may be able to help others.

Support

Based on the 10 Keys to Happier Living [www.actionforhappiness.org], a little and often approach to self-care and wellbeing may be more manageable, achievable and realistic for school staff. Another key is Meaning; give it a go by reminding yourself of and re-grounding yourself in your morals/philosophy on life, your religion or beliefs, your work goals/rationale, the meaning you place on relationships [family and friends]. Try to link the ‘give it a go’ from last time [articulating an achievement each day] to one of these ‘meanings’.
