Learn Together  |  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

Cambridge Primary Heads is an association set up by school leaders for school leaders; working together so that we all feel informed, empowered and looked after.

Our Headteacher Cluster Representatives sit on a range of LA groups and boards. This ensures that we can keep you updated with key issues that affect our schools and ensure that our voice is heard.

Our priorities for the year ahead:

  • Support Headteacher well-being.
  • Establish quality networking opportunities and CPD for Heads.
  • Contribute to the discussions on SEND and SEMH provision in Cambridgeshire.
  • Make sure that as Heads, we feel informed of what is going on across Cambridgeshire.

Cluster Reps should be circulating the following documents:

  • Headspace registration info
  • The LA response to the CPH Feedback from Heads
  • The NGA Wellbeing evaluation tool and a report by Lisa Valla on Effective Governance and supporting the wellbeing of Headteachers

Schools are asked to respond to the school funding consultation by completing the Online Response Survey at the following link: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/6NNVSG/

School funding consultation documents have been uploaded to the  new Heads website here and responses should be submitted by 5pm on 23rd October 2020.

Take care.

Sasha Howard

Primary school takes learning to the great outdoors

With social distancing changing the way classrooms look across the country, a Cambridgeshire school has put in place a unique way to keep children safe while creating a fun learning environment.

Pupils at Bewick Bridge Community Primary School in Cambridge will now be having lessons in the ‘Forest School’, where they’ll learn vital skills while following the government’s suggestion to increase learning outside to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

Wellbeing for Education Return Programme

Building on your work

As we come to the end of the first half of term, the majority of our children and young people in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough are settled and engaged in school. Thanks to your hard work and commitment most children and young people have made a safe and successful return to learning.

However, as we are all aware, some of our children and young people, and school staff themselves, have felt an impact on mental health and wellbeing more than others. Escalating mental health needs, and continuing national debate as how best to reduce transmission rates, brings greater uncertainty.

Wellbeing for Education Return programme

The national Wellbeing for Education Return programme seeks to better equip schools and colleges to promote children and young people’s wellbeing, resilience and recovery in response to COVID-19.  As well as strengthening and building wellbeing and resilience, the programme aims to prevent the onset of mental health problems and ensure those with pre-existing or emerging difficulties access the right support.  The programme will support schools and college staff to:

  • Reflect on an effective whole school approach to wellbeing.
  • Respond to additional pressures some children and young people may be feeling as a direct result of the pandemic.
  • Respond to any emotional responses that children, young people or school staff may be experiencing from loss or bereavement, stress, anxiety or low mood.

The programme has been developed and funded by the Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care, in partnership with Public Health England.

The programme will be delivered over five (one hour, virtual) sessions between November 2020 and June 2021. At no cost to schools, there will be an opportunity to listen to nationally accredited research and good practice, whilst working with colleagues from local education and mental health services and similar educational settings.

More details here.

Please encourage staff members that have a responsibility for overseeing mental health and wellbeing (maximum: two per school) to register for the programme by 06-NOV-2020. Registration can be completed at: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/LG00JA/.
