Twenty hours a week of formal childcare is most beneficial for England's most disadvantaged children but they are less likely to access high-quality provision, a study has found.
The latest report on the Study of Early Education and Development (SEED), commissioned by the Department for Education, found a mixed picture in relation to outcomes of different types of childcare, from informal provision with friends and relatives, through to childminders and nursery groups. Researchers found that children classed as among the 40 per cent most disadvantaged in England, who attend formal group childcare for 10 hours per week no later than age two and an average of 20 hours per week of formal group childcare between age two and the start of school, have a higher chance of achieving the expected level of development measured by the early years foundation stage profile (EYFSP) by the time they reach reception.
The author of the report, Ted Melhuish, is one of the keynote speakers at Cambridgeshire's Early Years Conference (see Training/Events section below for more details and to book your place - places are still available on the Friday conference).
Talk is the primary medium for teaching and learning in schools, but not all classroom talk supports learning effectively. Professor Neil Mercer from Hughes Hall, Cambridge University states that unless schools provide the necessary rich talk experiences and actually teach children the ways of talking and listening they will need in a range of situations, the opportunities open to so many children may unfortunately be limited. Professor Neil Mercer is one of this year's key note speakers a the Cambridgeshire English Conference (see Training/Events section below for more details and to book your place).

We were delighted to receive more than 100 entries for our recent SEND Pledge Art Competition.
Several of the artworks have been used to illustrate our SEND Pledge – Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Expects - which sets out how we can allwork with and care for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND). We have also produced a poster with all the fantastic winning pictures which it would be great to see displayed in and around schools to show your commitment to supporting children and young people with SEND.
You can download the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough SEND Strategy and Pledge here.
