Dear Reader,

Last month the CYP Committee and I reviewed the Director of Education’s report on educational performance in 2019 across Cambridgeshire, up to and including Key Stage 4.

I was delighted to see the very strong performance of our children at Key Stage 4 – or what most of the outside world call GCSEs –where basic measures of a strong pass in both English and Maths, still to be verified nationally,  show significant improvements. Both measures place Cambridgeshire in the top quartile for performance as well as in regional and statistical neighbour rankings, where we are also top quartile.  This is fantastic news.

But we were all concerned that outcomes for primary school children while showing an overall  improvement,  still remain around (or just below) the national average, particularly as the majority live in above average social economic areas.

Where there is disadvantage there are bigger challenges, so we have a dedicated officer working with schools to improve outcomes. Of 60 schools we’ve advised on effective ways of using Pupil Premium funding, 21 saw improvements in results for disadvantaged pupils compared to last year.

I meet regularly with the Director for Education, the Head of the School Intervention Service, and through the year attend many briefing events – and am made fully aware of schools causing concern, or of specific issues.   But I am also made fully aware of, and will continue to celebrate, the good news coming from our schools and the hard work that teachers, governors and parents do to make sure every child gets the opportunity of a great education in Cambridgeshire.

Regards

Simon

Coronavirus - Advice for all schools

With the news around this virus continuing, we wanted to remind schools to continue to refer to the guidance published daily by the Government. There is no separate national guidance for schools.

There is a specific section on travellers from Wuhan and China taking children to school.

Taking children to school

We recommend that you stay at home for 14 days after arriving from Wuhan or Hubei Province (or elsewhere in China if you have symptoms), and avoid public places. Where possible, contact a friend or family member to take your children to school.

If Headteacher is approached by parents, then please use the guidance for answering their questions and direct them to it..

Northstowe Education Campus

Northstowe drone pic

Dramatic drone footage of the Northstowe Education Campus has just been shared. Year 7 students moved into the first phase of the secondary school during October half term and construction continues on a 110-place Special Education Needs (SEN) school which is set to open at the beginning of summer term 2020, an eight-court indoor sports hall, gymnasium suite, café, dance and fitness studios, outdoor sports facilities and a large school hall with attached drama studios designed for both school and community use.

Kier Eastern and Faithful and Gould are working with the County Council on the Education Campus, which, once complete will also include a sixth form college, a new primary school, (the second of three primary schools due to be built in Northstowe) and a pre-school.

The drone footage can be seen here.
