Dear Reader,

I hope that the new term is progressing well in your schools, I have seen some great work going on with the changes schools are making to their curriculum and to raising the profile of reading in their schools.

To start the new year my service has changed its title from Schools Intervention Service to the School Improvement Service. We believe that this new title more accurately reflects the work that we do. We have had several new teams join the service recently, including: The PSHE team, the adviser for Outdoor Education, PE adviser and the Wisbech Adventure Playground, these teams are already contributing greatly to whole school improvement. I have been amazed to hear of the wonderful work that the team working at the Wisbech Adventure playground does with pupils who are finding school challenging. They have had some incredible successes and are always happy to admit pupils from primary schools from any area who need additional support for part of the week, they have never turned anyone away. Please do contact Violet Loveridge for further information.

We have had twenty schools inspected under the new Ofsted framework so far and the majority of the schools inspected have maintained their good rating. I know that the framework is placing an even greater expectation on Governors to show that they really know their schools and how their curriculum has been designed. The School Governance Team is ensuring that they are fully preparing Governors who are due inspection by visiting the schools to discuss in school training requirements.

We welcome Holly Crofts to the School Governance Team who is Lead Adviser for Peterborough and Fenland.

The English and maths team has worked with Stephen Brown (Outdoor Education Adviser) to develop maths trails for many towns in the county and at Grafham Water. These trails can be used by parents and children on their days out, please contact Emma Fuller or Stephen Brown for more details. This academic year the English and maths team have done a great deal of ‘in- school’ work and between them have worked with more than a hundred schools so far this academic year. Once predicted school results have been received, we will be approaching schools to ask if they would like a member of the team to work with them on running an Easter School. We welcome Alice Philpin to the English team and welcome back Anna Walker.

Our results for Disadvantaged Pupils continues to be an area of significant focus and although Cambridgeshire LA improved reading, writing and maths combined results for disadvantaged pupils by three percentage points (five percentage points in maths), we are still one of the lowest performing counties in England. Diane Stygal (Leadership Adviser) is working really hard with schools on a range of initiatives and has already visited over sixty schools. Please see the monthly bulletin item below.

I look forward to  visiting your schools or seeing you at meetings this term. (If you are in the Opportunity Area, look out for details on the Conference for Curriculum planning on 11th March, led by Alex Bedford).

Applications open for Internship Programme in Cambridgeshire. Do you have a member of staff that would like to train as a teacher?

Internship

The Cambridgeshire paid teacher internship is a two-year programme that offers an alternative route to obtaining qualified teacher status. The training revolves around the practicalities of working in a school and develops important skills, such as questioning and planning. Each intern will have a mentor within their own school, with whom they will meet on a regular basis.

In year one, interns will work as a TA in the first two terms, with some teaching or small group teaching in the third term. In year two, interns will train as apprentice. More information at: https://www.teachincambs.org.uk/train-to-teach/cambridge-paid-teacher-internship/

Contact Lynne Birch if you would like to discuss this opportunity for your school.

Cambridgeshire Libraries will shortly be launching "Read it Again!" Award

read it again
  • ‘Read it Again’ is is a unique award for a first-time picture book by a single author/illustrator
  • Thousands of children in local schools and libraries read, discuss and then vote for their favourite book from a shortlist of six new titles
  • The award encourages children to express their opinion and think about what makes a ‘good book’

In 2019, over 5,000 children took part in the award and voted for their favourite book.  From Monday 3rd February schools can take part in the 2020 award by buying the books at a discounted price (Please note we no longer lend sets of books to schools).

We are very grateful for the support that schools have shown for the award, which is now in its 15th year, and the value they place on it. We hope that many of you will be keen to take part again this year and look forward to working with you to continue to introduce exciting new authors to your children. To register your interest, please email Sue Batchelor

More information on the award to date can be found here.
