Read It Again

We will be launching our Picture Book Award ‘Read it Again!’ 2020, on Monday February 3rd.

This is a unique award for a first-time picture book by one single author/illustrator. Thousands of Cambridgeshire children in local schools will vote for their favourite book from a shortlist of six titles. Last year over 5,000 children took part in the award. Children will also have a chance to vote in our larger libraries over the Easter holidays. The winning title will be announced in May.

The 2020 shortlisted titles, chosen from a longlist of over 30, are:

  • ‘Once Upon a Unicorn Horn’ by Beatrice Blue.
  • ‘Milo and Monty’ by Roxana De Rond.
  • ‘Big Cat’ by Emma Lazell
  • ‘Our Favourite Day’ by Joowon Oh
  • ‘One Fox: a counting thriller book’ by Kate Read
  • ‘The Caveman next Door’ by Tom Tinn-Disbury

Public computers -

In preparation for the replacement of our public computers, there will be no public pc access in libraries on Thursday 13th February while we complete background work to the system. Public Wi fi will be operating as normal. We apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.

 

Reading Well for Children

This month sees the launch of Reading Well for children collections in our libraries, coinciding with Children’s Mental Health Week.

These 33 specially chosen books are to help children understand their feelings and worries and cope with tough times. They have been chosen by children, carers, health experts and librarians.

You can find the collections in your local library from 3rd February.

There are also Reading Well booklists for young people and for adults to help you manage your health and wellbeing. To find out more visit www.reading-well.org.uk

BBC's 100 Novels That Shaped Our World

2019 saw the 300th anniversary of the publication of Robinson Cruse and to celebrate the BBC launched their list of 100 novels which shaped our world.

Become a Detective this half-term

Kinetic Science’s “Forensics and Crime solving” Workshop is on tour in Cambridgeshire this February Half Term.

Dress as a CSI agent, gather evidence, dust for prints, check out fibres and try and solve the crime. Come and join in the fun and be a sleuth at the following libraries: Huntingdon, Littleport, Cambourne, Papworth, Buckden, St Neots and Ely.

Plug to Power, renewable energy generation from water recycling

Friday 28th February 2pm – 3.30pm at St Neots Library

Stephen Riches from Anglian Water will discuss how water received from homes and businesses is recycled and safely returned to the environment. Find out about the challenges faced in relation to population growth and climate change, and the wider strategy to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

 

Rock Road Library Friendly Cafe

This is a monthly drop-in cafe at Rock Road Library held on the 3rd Thursday of the month. To be held in the library’s community room – and the library’s garden if the weather is kind.
