Dear Reader,

Positive time for teachers looking for new opportunities in the area

The extract from the press release below is about to be issued by the Department for Education this week. It's clear recognition of our professional approach to recruitment and leading the way in this national project to save schools time and money to attract teachers. A promotional campaign will start soon to raise the profile to teaching job seekers.

“Schools across Cambridgeshire are leading the way in signing up to the Department for Education (DfE)’s free job search and listings service, Teaching Vacancies, which launched in April 2019 to help schools and teachers with recruitment.

Every school in the Cambridgeshire area (100%) has signed up to the service. This ensures that ahead of the main recruitment cycle when teachers look for their next career move, local schools are well placed to recruit cost effectively.

Commenting on Teaching Vacancies, Jenny Rankine (Principal) said:

"Teaching Vacancies has the power to save schools much needed, extra money to reinvest into the educational experience for every young person."

A DfE spokesperson said: “This is a good time to be a teacher in the East of England. We are delighted with the uptake of Teaching Vacancies and the positive impact this promises for our schools. If schools and job seekers continue to use the service, we can change the way recruitment happens in schools and make a real difference where it matters most.”

Nationally, Teaching Vacancies has already been welcomed by over 60% of schools, advertising over 16,000 vacancies.”

Heads working group - Primary Data

The LA has worked hard in the last 18 months to improve the quality of the data we produce for schools.  This has included school on a page and QLA alongside other improvements in FFT.  We are keen to review the information we have produced and look at how we can further improve data to support children in schools.  This includes looking at further information on SEND, inclusion and social care and to address the changes in the Ofsted framework.  We are therefore proposing to hold the next working group meeting on the 21st November, 10.30 am-12.00 noon at the Amber Centre, Mayfield Road, Huntingdon PE29 1NL.  If you want to attend, please email me so we have an idea of numbers.

Schools Forum / Budget Consultation

The budget continues to be a key challenge for schools in Cambridgeshire.  Following funding announcements, we are now starting to build our budget for schools and the Schools Forum meet on Friday to discuss the proposals for consultation.  The papers can be accessed here.  It is a challenging context especially around SEND so it is important all schools engage in the consultation.  The consultation paper and school levels figures will be available shortly.

Consultation sessions will take place at the CPH conference on the 14 November (book here – head only) and the CSH meeting on the 3 December.  I will cover the key headlines in upcoming meetings with nursery and special schools as funding arrangements are different for these sectors.  We have organised two governor briefing sessions for the 20 November at Stanton House Huntingdon (6pm until 8pm) and 25 November at CPDC (6pm until 8pm) – you can book onto these here. Places are limited so book early.  Business managers and other staff in schools are welcome to attend these sessions.

World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18 - 24 November )

Antibiotics treat bacterial infections such as meningitis, tuberculosis and pneumonia. They don’t work on viruses, therefore cannot treat cold/flu infections. Bacteria are continually trying to find new ways of withstanding antibiotic treatment (antibiotic resistance) and this is one of the biggest threats facing us today.  Overuse/misuse of antibiotics is a major factor that causes antibiotic resistance. The more often a person takes antibiotics, the more likely they are to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria.

There are simple actions you can take to help keep antibiotics working:

  • Don’t ask for antibiotics if you have a cough or cold. Antibiotics should only be taken for bacterial infections. Many infections get better on their own, without antibiotics. Ask your pharmacist for advice first and they may be able to help with your symptoms.
  • If you are given antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed; never save them for later or share them with others.

You can also help prevent infections spreading by:
  • Using tissues and disposing of them when you sneeze.
  • Washing hands thoroughly with soap, especially after you have used a tissue or sneezed into your hand.
  • Get the flu vaccine if you or your child are eligible.

Please contact your local Health Protection Team if you suspect an outbreak (i.e. 2 or more cases of the same infection or illness).  East of England HPT: 0300 303 8537.

For further information, PHE has a programme called e-Bug, which provides a range of educational resources on antibiotics and antibiotic resistance linked to the national curriculum. PHE have drafted a template newsletter, which could be shared this World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18-24 November). Please let PHE know if you share the newsletter via the Antibiotic Guardian Schools webpage.

Outdoor Classroom Day, Thursday 7 November 2019

Tomorrow is Outdoor Classroom Day and a recent study by the University of Westminster found that Pupils and teachers noticed improvements in pupils’ engagement with learning, concentration and behaviour, as well as positive impacts on health and wellbeing and teachers’ job satisfaction” by implementing outdoor learning within the curriculum.

At Grafham Water Centre we see the benefits of outdoor learning every day. A parent recently contacted us to share the impact on her son:

“Thank you so much for giving Benji such a character building opportunity ... it has helped his confidence immensely with his special needs and processing problems and he has developed so much as an individual.”

We are keen for as many children as possible to benefit from these sorts of experiences so in celebration of Outdoor Classroom Day we are offering 20% off any new Outdoor Learning visits booked for November ‘19 – February ’20 at Grafham Water Centre. We can also provide teacher training to provide ideas of outdoor activities that can be used in schools.  Please contact Alison.Baines@cambridgeshire.gov.uk for more details.

Duty to manage asbestos - condition monitoring reports

In order to comply with regulation 4 (Duty to manage) of The Control of Asbestos regulations 2012, Asbestos Monitoring Reports should now be returned for all Cambridgeshire Schools.

Action that is now required:

  • Firstly, identify who is going to make these checks.
  • Secondly, visually inspect the condition of all accessible asbestos containing material against your asbestos register to verify if any articles have deteriorated.
  • Report the findings to: property.compliance@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

If you have any questions or cause for concern relating to the condition of Asbestos containing materials please make contact with the Compliance Team using the email address supplied above.

Condition monitoring reports should be submitted by all schools on a bi-annual basis, in September and January of each year.
