Dear Reader,

30th Anniversary of UN Convention of the rights of the child

Thirty years ago, world leaders made a historic commitment to the world’s children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international agreement on childhood. Over the last 30 years a great deal of progress has been supported by this Convention including a reduction of 50% in the death rates of children under 5, halving of the proportion of undernourished children and 2.6 billion more people have cleaner drinking water, all in the last 30 years, propped up by this important agreement, which is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world.

Yet there is still lots of work to do as globally there are more than 262million children out of school, 650million girls and women were married before their 18th birthday and there are still 1 in 4 children who live in areas with extremely limited water resources.

I would like to invite you all to become more familiar with this important treaty on the anniversary of its inception and I offer the following links to resources that will help inspire and educate our pupils and staff teams across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.

It feels more crucial than ever that we engage children and young people with their rights and actively encourage them to question and seek answers not just locally but on a global stage. I look forward to hearing about how we are supporting awareness of this treaty.

Toni Bailey

Primary inspection data summary report (IDSR) release

We are pleased to inform you that the new 2019 inspection data summary report (IDSR) for primary data, is now available through a link to the new Ofsted IDSR service in DfE’s Analyse School Performance (ASP). The primary IDSRs hold provisional data for key stage 2, key stage 1 and phonics, and context data.

This year, the children looked after collection closure date, was delayed (due to technical issues) by five weeks.  Therefore, the children looked after data and data for disadvantaged pupils will not be included until the revised data releases.

We have also published a new guidance document for the primary IDSR. We will add secondary-specific guidance to coincide with the release of the secondary IDSR. You can find the new guidance here.

At the same time as the provisional secondary release, we will be removing historic IDSRs from Analyse School Performance. Any users wishing to keep a copy of their historic IDSRs are advised to download and save their IDSRs before they are removed later in the autumn term.

Should you have any IDSR data queries, please contact the Schools Pre-Inspection Data & Insight team at: school.performance.data@ofsted.gov.uk

BBC News survey: How is the shape of the school day changing?

This is an anonymous survey and all responses will be treated as confidential

We want to know how the school day is changing. Are schools starting or finishing earlier or later on certain days? Are break times longer or shorter? And what’s behind the changes? To create more opportunities for pupil enrichment? More time for staff development? And is school funding driving any of these changes?

The overall results of the survey will be broadcast across BBC News programmes, on TV, radio and online.  Please take part in the survey by clicking here.

If you are interested in taking part in the BBC's coverage or you have any other questions please contact Katherine Smith at the BBC.

Get involved in the Big Conversation about how we shape our NHS

the big conversation

Local residents are being encouraged to have their say on the future of local NHS services as part of The Big Conversation.  Funding for healthcare across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is under pressure. More people are using NHS services locally, and resources are limited.  The Big Conversation has been created to understand what is most important to the local community. Feedback received will be used to inform future plans and help shape our local NHS.  Please take part by completing a short survey online here.

Cambridgeshire Libraries' Space Chase: Summer Reading Challenge 2019

Summer reading challenge

Cambridgeshire Libraries are delighted to report a very successful Summer Reading Challenge – the annual event which encourages children to read 6 books over the school holidays, collecting incentives as they progress.

Over 7400 children signed up for the challenge this year and over 4400 children were awarded medals and certificates for completing it - a 9% increase on last year. Each child who completed the Challenge was invited to an Award Ceremony at their local library, where they were presented with a medal and certificate. We hope that many were also encouraged to bring their medals and certificates into school to proudly show!

We would like to thank all the schools who support Libraries by encouraging their children and families to take part. The challenge is an invaluable way to keep children reading over the long school summer holidays, offering an enjoyable activity in the six-week summer break from school when reading skills and confidence can dip,

We also had 170 under 16s volunteer over the summer, whose support helps ensure the success of the Challenge, as well as that of our programme of events. It’s also great for their CVs! 300 themed activities took place across all 34 of our libraries.

Schools are very welcome to contact their local library to bring classes in for visits. Together we hope we can encourage children to be enthusiastic readers and library users for life!
