Cambridgeshire Libraries is delighted to announce that the winner of the 2019 Read It Again! Children’s Picture Book Award is ……………..‘Mini Rabbit Not Lost’ by John Bond (published by HarperCollins).
Many thanks to all the schools that took part this year. We received over 5,000 votes and Mini Rabbit was a very popular winner. Now in its 14th year, “Read it Again!” is an award for a first time-picture book where the words and pictures are the work of one individual. Taking part in the award is a great way for schools to introduce children to some of the best new picture books. The award has been variously described as “amazing”, “inspirational”, “fantastic”, and “wonderful” and many teachers regard it as one of the literacy highlights in their teaching year.
Thanks to Peters, schools were able to buy discounted sets of the shortlist to take part in the award. One lucky participating school, The Roundhouse in St Neots, has been selected at random to receive a visit by the winning author.
The other titles on the shortlist were:
‘Nipper and the Lunchbox’ by Lucy Dillamore
‘The King who Banned the Dark’ by Emily Haworth-Booth
‘I Can Fly’ by Fifi Kuo
‘The Weaver’ by Qian Shi
‘Red and the City’ by Marie Voigt
For further information, and to watch a winner’s video from John which will be posted shortly, please see https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/libraries-leisure-&-culture/libraries/library-news/read-it-again/.
All of the titles, as well as previous winners, are available to borrow for free from Cambridgeshire Libraries.

The funding challenges for our schools are significant. Cambridgeshire is one of the lowest funded counties across the country, despite our county being the fastest growing in the UK. The impact of reduced funding is being felt by children and teachers across the county, despite the countless efforts of our teachers to maintain standards in the face of stretched budgets.
We’re highlighting the issue to our local MPs and working with the 42 other lowest funded education authorities to put forward a new fair model for distributing education funding in England - so we can get a fair deal for Cambridgeshire. Engagement model EOI
Last autumn, DfE announced that a new statutory assessment will be introduced in the 2020/21 academic year to assess pupils working below the standard of the national curriculum and not engaged in subject-specific study at the end of key stages 1 and 2. The engagement model will replace P scales 1 to 4 and is based on the ‘7 aspects of engagement’ model.
To support the implementation of the engagement model, the DfE have committed to producing a detailed guidance and training package for schools to be delivered through a cascade, ’train the trainers’ approach. More information will be available once the development of the package is under way.
