Learn Together  |  Cambridgeshire County Council

Dear Reader,

A message from Rachel Snape - Chair of the CSIB

@CambsSIB #CambsEd

The Cambridgeshire School Improvement Board (CSIB) brings together representatives of all sectors of education Nursery, Primary, Special, Secondary, Sixth Form and FE, with the Teaching School Alliances, MATS, the Diocesan Authorities, the Universities, County Councillors, The LA, Governors, the Teacher Unions and the Regional Schools Commissioner. The purpose of the Board is to work collaboratively to improve educational outcomes in schools by ensuring all parts of the school improvement system work better and stronger together.

The board meets 6 times and year and in partnerships with Schools, MATS, Teaching School Alliances, Universites the LA and other organisations has been working on 4 Key Priorites, as well as Recruitment and Retention in the County.

1.   Define and promote a Cambridgeshire entitlement for leadership development.

2.   Commission programmes to accelerate the achievement of our disadvantaged groups.

3.   Champion raised aspirations for Cambridgeshire, to include a cultural entitlement for all children.

4.   Agree and implement a county-wide, cross phase data sharing agreement.

The CSIB has also spent some time looking at other partnership models outside of the county including educational partnerships that are members of the Association of Area Educational Partnerships, this research has positively shaped our thinking and as our logo suggests as we go into the new year we hope to evolve to ensure that the partnership proactively works with and for all stakeholders, the children, our colleagues and communites in our creative and innovative county!

The CSIB has an active Twitter presence that retweets any educational conferences, training, research and school events that are happening in Cambridgeshire and if relevant beyond. Find us @CambsSIB We love to celebrate all the great things that are happening in Cambridgeshire so if you’d like us to find your event use the hashtag #CambsEd.

The CambsSIB is one of the key sponsors for The Cambridgeshire Festival of Education (see Events section below), billed as “The most optimistic education festival in the world, probably” you can follow the festival updates @CambsEdFest

Best wishes for a happy and restful end of term

Message from LGA about Workload Reduction Toolkit - Deadline date for response to DfE

The Department for Education (DfE) published the Workload Reduction Toolkit in July 2018. It provides free online training materials, audit tools, practical examples and model policies, developed and tested by school leaders and teachers. To further improve the toolkit, DfE would like to publish case studies and practical examples in relation to teacher pay and appraisal and behaviour management and we would like your support.

To help inform the updated toolkit, DfE would be very grateful if you could share practical examples with them, or, contact them if you would like to discuss your practice, by getting in touch at workload.solutions@education.gov.uk by Wednesday 5 December 2018. DfE want to make sure this process is not time consuming so please send this in whatever format you use. Please also include your name, school/organisation and contact details in the email so we can get in touch with you if necessary. All schools, organisations or individuals contributing to the toolkit will receive recognition in the final publication.

Cambridge Music Remembrance Concert

Members of the Cambridgeshire Youth Wind Orchestra have been praised for a “wonderful” and “stirring” concert which they gave in Chatteris as part of this year’s events marking the end of the First World War.

The concert took place in Chatteris Parish Church on 3 November in the build-up to the nationwide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice.

The County Youth Wind Orchestra is the pinnacle of Cambridgeshire Music’s range of wind, brass and percussion ensembles and is for advanced musicians who have attained the equivalent of Grade 5 on their chosen instrument.

Teaching Assistant (TA) Apprenticeships - Do you have a member of staff ready to step up?

The Education Directorate is working with our partners LGSS to start a group of TA apprentices (Level 3) in Cambridgeshire schools.  Do you have a need to upskill your TA team and have a member of staff that might be suitable?  Here is a link to the apprenticeship standard that will tell you what they will learn and the skills they will acquire. To make a start on this journey, please contact Paula Schofield  who will talk you through the process and get you started.

2018/2019 School Improvement Offer

The School Improvement Offer for 18/19 has officially been announced and more details can be found here.

The key points of the offer are:

  • the floor and coasting standards will be used as ways to identify schools that need help, rather than as triggers for intervention ahead of an academy conversion
  • schools that meet this trigger will receive support from a designated National Leader of Education who will help the existing leadership team access the school improvement resources.
  • a subset of these schools, judged as ‘Requires Improvement’ in their last two Ofsted inspections, will have access of up to £16,000 to fund that support.
  • the ‘coasting’ measure will no longer be used as the starting point of a formal intervention – this was a key pledge by the Education Secretary during a speech to school leaders earlier this year.

The support is expected to start from January 2019.  During the remainder of the autumn term 2018 contact will be made with local authorities and academy trusts about schools that provisional data suggests are eligible for support.

Further details on the expected role of NLEs will be provided at the NLE briefing events.  Please note NLEs will need to have attended a briefing event in order to deliver the 2018/19 offer.

Briefing events for NLEs have been scheduled for 29 November 2018 in London and 14 January 2019 in Leeds starting at 10am and finishing at 3pm.  Further details will be sent to those signed up, as well as a survey to identify capacity for the remainder of the academic year.

We would be grateful if you could encourage NLEs to respond to the invitation to the second of these events as soon as possible. If you are an NLE and have not received an invitation, please contact school.improvement@education.gov.uk
