Diwali

Lit candles

Happy Diwali!

As the year draws to an end, Broxtowe would like to invite you to learn and participate in the Season of Lights celebration which marks significant joyous events taking place throughout our diverse community.

Diwali marks the start of this season and is a festival of light that is the greatest Hindu celebration. It is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains, making it the largest Indian Holiday.

The celebration commemorates the story of how the Princess Sita was saved from the evil of the demon Ravan and guided back to safety through village lamps it is a tale of light over dark.

Bonfire Night Safety

Someone holding a sparkler

We hope our residents enjoy bonfire night weekend, however we hope you enjoy yourselves safely.

Here's some top tips from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue:

  • Use fireworks away from people, houses and flammable materials
  • Only buy fireworks from licenced sellers, with the CE mark
  • Remember it is illegal for under 18's to buy fireworks
  • Read all safety instructions before letting off fireworks
  • Stick to fireworks curfews: midnight on 5 November, 1 am on Diwali, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year, and 11pm every other night
  • Be considerate to animals
  • Do not use sparklers or fireworks in the streets or other public places
  • Only adults should handle fireworks
  • Children and young people should be supervised at all times, and enjoy displays from a safe distance
  • Keep all naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit
  • Make sure you dispose of used fireworks safely by soaking them in water overnight
  • Do not light sky lanterns as they are a fire hazard and pose danger to people, homes, pets and wildlife

Remembrance Sunday 14 November

A field of poppies

This year, due to the ongoing pandemic and to ensure the safety of our residents, we have made the difficult decision to only hold a very low-key, invitation-only wreath laying ceremony at Beeston War Memorial commencing at 10.50am. This will be followed by a short Remembrance Service at St John’s church which is also by invitation only.

Unfortunately there will not be a parade in Beeston this year. Please do not come along to the area unless you have been invited. Please stay at home and keep warm instead as we will be showing a live stream of the wreath laying ceremony on our Facebook page.

Men's Mental Health Month

Need to talk? Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123

November marks the start of Men's Mental Health Month, some of you may be taking part in the annual Movember to raise much needed funds, but there's lots of other ways you can get involved so here's just a few ideas:

  • Message a mate, check in with a friend to make sure they're alright. If you are worried about someone in your life who is going through a hard time, talking can be the first step.
  • Wear the Mental Health Foundation green ribbon and pin it for men's mental health.
  • Take part in a Curry & Chaat fundraiser – create a safe space for men to talk.

Ambitious plans for the future are unveiled

Artist impression of what area could look like with more homes, businesses and more

Residents around Toton, Chilwell, Stapleford, Sandiacre and Long Eaton, as well as the surrounding areas, are being asked by Broxtowe Borough Council for their views on a Strategic Masterplan for the development of the area. The consultation will run until midnight on Monday 13 December.

The scheduled closure of the historic Chetwynd Barracks in 2024 and any proposed transport works around the potential Toton East Midlands Hub, provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to map out the future for the area, create cycle pathways, green spaces, new schools, healthcare facilities and modern communities, which offer affordable and carbon neutral homes.

Leaflets will be sent to over 80,000 residents over the coming weeks asking for their views. People can view the plans and leave their comments in a ‘virtual’ display room.
