National Walking Month this May #WalkThisMay

National Walking Month 2021

Walking is good for our minds, our bodies and our neighbourhoods and has been a lifeline during the past year, helping people stay active and connected.

As well as the personal benefits we’ve experienced, lockdown has highlighted the improvements that can be made to congestion and air quality when we drive less. That’s why we want people to #WalkThisMay.

Top tip! Create a checklist for all our Parks & Open Spaces in Broxtowe and see how many you can visit this May!

Great News!

Our Activities Coordinators have some exciting news within Independent Living.

Lindsay says 'The time has finally come to start planning our social activities for our Independent Living Tenants again!

We are planning 'Walk & Talk' meet ups across the Borough to give our tenants the opportunity to socialise and get exercise in a COVID secure way. We're so excited to be able to reconnect with our older tenants and get back on the path towards a new normal.'

Nicky says 'All information regarding times and locations will be displayed in all our Independent Living schemes. Everyone (up to 30 people) will be welcome to join us for a stroll, it’s a great way to meet new people and get active again.

I am eager to get out and about again, I have really missed all the tenants and delivering activities. All of our activities will follow social distancing guidelines.'

These activities will be a great way for tenants to reconnect with each other as well as the activities coordinators.

Look at for our next Housing News, where we'll sharing pictures from the walks!

Going on Holiday?

colourful beach huts by the coast in England

With lockdown easing and self-catered accommodation reopening, many people are starting to make UK holiday plans.

Here are a few top tips to keep your home safe whilst you are away.

Before you go:

  • Check your home insurance is up to date
  • Unplug any devices that are not needed and shut all the doors. It's a great fire safety precaution
  • Ask your neighbour to water your pot plants. This won’t just keep them healthy for your return but will stop them appearing wilted and indicating an absent owner
  • Install a light on a timer switch that comes on in the evening
  • Keep valuables out of sight and don’t leave them where they can be seen through a window.

And when you return, run the cold taps for at least 10 minutes. This is to reduce the risk of legionella, as the water has been sat stagnant whilst you've been away.

Have peace of mind, whilst your enjoy the UK countryside!

Mental Health awareness week banner - all about nature

The theme for this years Mental Health Awareness Week is 'Nature'.

Nature is so central to our psychological and emotional health, that it’s almost impossible to realise good mental health for all without a greater connection to the natural world.

Why not get involved, share how you #ConnectwithNature and how it helps with your mental health.

  • Experience nature: Take time to recognise and grow your connection with nature during the week. Take a moment to notice and celebrate nature in your daily life.
  • Share nature: Take a photo, video or sound recording and share the connections you’ve made during the week, to inspire others. Join the discussion on how you’re connecting with nature by using the hashtags #ConnectWithNature #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
  • Talk about nature: How you can help encourage people to find new ways to connect with nature in your local environment.

Find out more by visiting the Mental Health website.
