More Information

White roses on brown recyclable paper

Are Valentine’s gifts recyclable?

Valentine’s Day will have been very different this year as we all remained in National Lockdown for at-home celebrations.

Whether it is a thoughtful gesture like a card or the full works with flowers and chocolates, we have some useful information about the packaging relating to this special day, to help you dispose of packaging wisely.

Cards: If they don’t have embellishments, glitter or metallic parts, they can be recycled.

Bouquet Wrappings: If the bouquet wrappings are plastic, there have to go in your waste bin but if wrapped in paper, dry out the paper then add to your recycling bin. Flowers once enjoyed and when starting to go brown, can be added to your compost heap or can go in your garden waste bin.

Chocolate Boxes: Cardboard parts are usually recyclable but check the packaging to make sure. Plastic inserts that hold the chocolate or chocolates inside the box are not usually recyclable but check packaging for details.

How to make Valentine’s Day 2022 as much about loving the environment as loving your partner:

  • Buy a bouquet from a local florist and ask for it to be wrapped in recyclable paper
  • Choose a card without embellishments, glitter or metallic parts so it can be recycled – it’s the thought and the message that counts!
  • Instead of boxes of chocolates, why not visit a local sweet shop and buy a selection of sweet treats, putting them in a recyclable paper bag?
  • Cook a nice meal from locally sourced produce (choosing products with less packaging) or make breakfast in bed as a treat.
  • Plant a flower, shrub or tree in your garden to celebrate Valentine’s Day and tie a colourful ribbon around the stem or trunk each year on the same day to mark the occasion.

Snow-covered bins

It’s Snow Trouble

It has been a very snowy winter! The weather along with National Lockdown has meant household bins have been fuller and refuse teams have sometimes emptied bins later than planner as they did the collections in heavy snow or on icy roads.

Thank you for your understanding as our teams tackled collections in cold and challenging weather this winter. The team reported residents smiling and waving at them through windows and even leaving small gifts to show their gratitude.

It just goes to show the kind of community we are here in Broxtowe! Despite the cold temperatures, the warmth felt from residents has made all the difference.

Thank you.

Spreading the message

We recently installed new advertising on the side of one of our refuse lorries. With COVID-19 still spreading across the country, it seemed only fitting to share a safety message with our residents on a vehicle that does the rounds in our Borough often.

The refuse team have embraced the message and been sharing a smile and a wave to lift residents’ spirits since March 2020, when the first Lockdown started. The team can be seen proudly driving the lorry on their collection routes, spreading the message to help stop the spread of the virus.

Have you seen our COVID-19 message lorry yet? Take a photo (if safe to do so) and send to us if you have, so we can share these with other residents. #SpreadSafetyNotCovid
