Celebrate Diwali Safely

Celebrate Diwali Safely

Lockdown restrictions mean that Diwali celebrations will be quite different this year but there are still lots of ways to mark this special occasion.

Although the celebrations might not be exactly what we imagined, there are still lots of ways to mark Diwali.

  • Some families are planning to have virtual celebrations so they can still see friends and relatives and share experiences.
  • Those celebrating Diwali usually decorate their homes, including by lighting small oil lamps called diyas, and this year they can do the same.
  • Families make rangoli patterns and put them outside their front door to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
  • Families who live together, or are in a support bubble together, can still also have a feast at home and make sweet treats.

When things get tough, we can find ourselves turning to alcohol to cope. But what many of us don't realise is that drinking too much and too often can make our mental health problems worse - such as anxiety and depression - and prevent them from being properly addressed.
