Preparing for winter weather

Think about flooding

flooding

There are some areas in our district which are prone to flooding. There are several things you can do to prepare, in case we get a lot of rain this winter:

  • Check your property's flood risk – think about what you store downstairs and, if possible, keep important documents upstairs
  • Invest in flood protection products such as air-brick covers and door barriers
  • Plan for ways to keep your home warm in case your heating system doesn’t work (e.g. stock up on blankets)
  • Prepare a grab bag of basic supplies (e.g. medication, torches, childcare supplies)
  • Register with Floodline Warning Direct on 0345 998 118 or sign up to receive flood warnings www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings
  • Know your risks. Have you seen our Risk and Resilience booklet? It tells you about the potential hazards in our district, the risks they may present and what you can do about them. For a paper copy, call our Emergency Planning team on 01376 557709, or click below to view it online.

Some tips for safe travel this winter:

  • Check weather information before you travel
  • Pack an emergency travel kit to keep in your vehicle (clothing, blankets, torch and batteries, snacks, phone charger)
  • Keep up-to-date with your vehicle maintenance – have your vehicle serviced and check it before going on a long journey
  • Driving in hazardous weather conditions can be challenging – have a look at the Met Office online for its dedicated pages on driving in rain, snow and ice

Keep warm and well

Don’t let the cold weather get you down. Keep warm and well this winter:

  • Heat your home to at least 18 degrees
  • Look after your health – don’t delay in getting treatment for minor winter ailments. Don’t forget to use local pharmacies
  • Check on others: check on older neighbours or relatives and make sure they’re safe and well
