 Nominate a good cause
Do you know of a good cause who would benefit from this scheme?
Bracknell Forest based charities, schools, youth groups and general good causes can benefit from our good causes project run as part of our recycling incentive scheme.
Every three months, a £1,000 pot provided by Bracknell Forest Council and its waste and recycling contractor Suez is up for grabs, with three good causes receiving a slice based on how many recycling incentive scheme points are donated to them.
Households who are signed up to the recycling incentive scheme can donate however many of their recycling rewards points they like to the nominated good causes, simply by logging onto their account. If you're not yet a member, find out more about the Bracknell Forest Council recycling rewards scheme here.
There are some great rewards on offer, such as reduced priced composters and water butts. The list of rewards may change at any time and are often updated. Visit our website to view the most current list of rewards.
So far, over 100 good causes have benefited from the scheme with thousands of pounds of funding being distributed throughout the borough since the start of the scheme.
If you know of a good cause that would benefit from this scheme, you can find out more and nominate them here.
 BBQ leftovers
How to store and reheat safely
BBQ leftovers are delicious, help save money and stops food being wasted. Here's how to reheat and eat safely.
- Transfer food off the bbq and away from the heat source, start cooling what you do not need quickly.
- If it is a large amount, transfer it into a shallow dish to help the heat dissipate. Food should be thoroughly cooled before putting it in the freezer. Ideally, you will need to get your leftovers in the fridge within 90 minutes.
- Keep your leftovers well sealed and separate to avoid cross contamination.
- If you know you will be able to eat the leftovers within two days, put them in the fridge once cooled. If there is a large amount which you are unlikely to get through, portion it up and freeze once cooled.
- Make sure the leftovers are thoroughly defrosted before heating.
- Reheat food until piping hot throughout, low and slow is the best method. If using a microwave, be aware they do not heat evenly throughout, so ensure you give it a stir halfway through cooking time.
- Do not reheat leftovers or freeze leftovers more than once.
- Leftovers should be heated until they reach and maintain 70C or above for 2 minutes.

Easy Spanish paella
Paella is a great way of using any leftover cooked meat from your bbq. The saffron spice gives this dish a wonderful authentic flavour and mellow yellow colour.

- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove of garlic, peeled and crushed
- 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped
- 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and chopped
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 200g long grain or risotto rice
- 250ml white wine
- 500ml chicken stock
- 350g pack picked seafood, frozen
- Leftover cooked meat such as chicken or pork
- 125g frozen peas
- Salt and ground black pepper
- Pinch of saffron (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan, add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, soak the saffron in 2 tbsp hot water, if using.
- Add the peppers and garlic, cook for 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the rice, wine, hot stock, saffron mixture and seasoning. Bring to the boil and simmer, stirring occasionally until almost all the liquid had disappeared.
- Add the seafood and leftover meat. Cover, turn the heat down and simmer for 5 minutes, taking the lid off every few minutes to stir.
- Add the peas and cook for a further few minutes until the liquid has evaporated. Season and serve.

re3grow compost
It has now been five years since re3 introduced re3grow compost to residents and each year it has become more and more popular. It is exciting to be able to offer our very own recycled garden waste back to residents as compost, as it helps to illustrate a recycling journey. re3grow is a peat-free compost and it conforms to BSI PAS 100 and the Compost Quality Protocol. It is available to purchase directly from the meet and greet teams at Longshot Lane at a competitive price of £4.20 per single 40 litre bag or three bags for £12.00. The councils do not make a profit from these sales.
Last year, residents recycled 20,111 tonnes of garden waste which was sent to the composting facility in Sutton Courtenay, South Oxfordshire. It was then put through a 12 week-long composting process using open windrows, where the garden waste is screened, shredded and matured. One of the stages is sanitation, where a high temperature between 65-80°C is maintained for a minimum of 7 consecutive days to kill of weeds, seeds and pathogens. After the process is completed, it is bagged and brought back to site for sale.

re3 community grow
re3 are once again offering local community groups or schools the opportunity to apply for free re3grow compost. The free compost is designed to promote recycling and community activities within the area.
Interested groups can apply and at the end of each month, the applications will be reviewed and will be contacted to let you know if your request has been successful. In some cases, re3 may be able to honour a request in part, but not in full. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and allocated compost subject to availability in your local authority area.

Crowthorne repair café
 What is a repair café?
We live in a throw-away society, buy it, use it, throw it! Far too many things get thrown away unnecessarily. That can change with the opening of a Repair Café in Crowthorne.
The Repair Café is a free community-centred workshop for people to bring items in need of repair so they can work together with volunteers to repair and maintain broken or faulty items. In addition, the café provides a place to meet and provide assistance with repairs to clothing, for example fixing a zip or repairing a broken kettle.
You can bring along most household items. Typical items include clothing, lamps, radios, stereos, strimmers, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, toasters, kettles, chairs, laptops to name but a few.
Crowthorne Repair Café normally operates on the last Saturday of every month between 10.30 – 12.30 at the Baptish Church Hub on Crowthorne High Street. There is no charge for entry or for time to assess, provide advice and attempt the repair, however any donation towards the running of the repair café will be gratefully received. For further information, please visit Crowthorne Repair Cafe.
