The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Keep an eye out for the fun ‘royal-related’ facts we are sharing on Facebook this week.

We have already shared how The Bullbrook river is one of the favoured haunts of the royal-sounding bird, the kingfisher (photo by Rob Solomon).

We will also look at:

  • regal-named apple varieties at Lily Hill Park
  • Windsor Forest and ancient woodlands
  • a historic ride at Caesar's Camp used by Queen Anne

Find out how our local greenspaces are some of the crown jewels of Bracknell Forest.

Bittern booms in local wetland

Bittern in reedbed, by Rob Solomon

We recently shared the news that Britain's loudest bird, the 'booming' bittern had been recorded at a local wetland in Winkfield.

Bitterns are members of the heron family. The ‘boom’ is the distinctive loud noise the males make in spring to establish territories and attract mates. It's what first alerted us to its presence.

The news created quite a buzz with excited residents and local wildlife enthusiasts, as bitterns are rare species, having almost disappeared twice from the UK.

Our newstory can be seen on our website.

Wildlife surveys

Our wildlife surveying page contains new information about why we carry out surveys, what we have recorded and how you can get involved.

Some key highlights of wildlife we have recorded in the borough, include:

  • 32 species of butterfly, including the rare silver-studded blue, grayling and purple emperor
  • 4 of the 6 reptiles native to the UK, including adder, grass snake, slow worm and common lizard
  • 3 native species of newt - great-crested, smooth and palmate
  • 18 wintering snipe have been recorded at Englemere Pond, a site of Special Scientific Interest
  • 10 species of wild orchid in Bracknell Forest, including heath-spotted, bee, pyramidal and southern-marsh
  • 15 harvest mice nests have been recorded in the reedbeds at Shepherd Meadows and 10 at Frost Folly.

In a future edition of our newsletter, we will share footage of some of the night-time visitors to local greenspaces, which our rangers have captured on motion-triggered trail cameras.

New green corridor events

Year of Green Corridors 2022 logo

The Year of Green Corridors 2022 highlights the value of green corridors for wildlife and people.

Corridors of trees, shrubs, streams, rivers and greenspaces provide safe passage for wildlife and support our mental and physical wellbeing.
