Summer Reading Challenge 2018.

The Summer Reading Challenge is organised by the Reading Agency and specifically aimed at children aged 4 – 11 years. It’s a national challenge and the biggest reading event for children in libraries.

Every year thousands of families all over the country take part and the aim of the challenge is to encourage children to continue their reading throughout the summer by getting them to read any six books of their choice from their library during the holidays. Each year there’s a different theme and this year it will be about Mischief Makers. I’m sure parents will be as excited as the children because this theme has been inspired by a much-loved iconic children’s title The Beano.

When does the reading challenge begin?

Saturday 14th July

The challenge is completely free! All your child needs is a library card… so if they’re not yet a member join them up so you they can start the challenge on Saturday 14th July. The challenge continues right through the holidays so there’s plenty of time to complete it. Sign up to start from 14th July and visit the library four times over the summer to pick up all your rewards.

The little rewards will help keep the children motivated along the way, and once all six books have been read your child will receive a medal and be presented with a certificate during a school assembly at the end of September.

Holiday packing, but no room in your suitcase for all those books?

Pack an e-book or two instead, or take a couple of e-audio books for the journey.

The library has a great selection you can download to your tablet or smartphone before you go away. There’s also a great selection for children! Install the BorrowBox app and RBdigital app for hundreds of e-books, e-audio books and e-magazines.

Did you know? You can change your e-books to white text on a black background so you can read more easily when out and about on the beach or in the park, or even hiding under the duvet when sharing a bedroom with your kids!
