Bradford Council and partners win award for our response to the pandemic
Bradford Council has picked up a prestigious national Local Government award from the Municipal Journal for Innovation in Building Diversity, for its partnership work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pictured above collecting the award are: Professor Dinesh Saralaya, MD, FRCP, Consultant Respiratory Physician & Director of the Bradford NIHR PRC, Noreen Akhtar, Bradford West Area Coordinator, Bradford Council and John Wright, Director, Bradford Institute for Health Research.
In March 2020 Bradford Council, the Centre for Applied Education Research, Bradford Teaching Hospitals and Bradford Institute for Health Research brought together their data, scientists and families to support an evidence-based response to the pandemic that helped to address the challenges faced by vulnerable people and families across the district.
The partnership created its own Bradford SAGE – the COVID Scientific Advisory Group (CSAG) to bring together its data to boost understanding of the local trends, issues and concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic working across a range of partners, including: community champions, health care practitioners, faith leaders, academics, youth workers and council ward officers.
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “I’m delighted that the work of this partnership in our district has been recognised in this way. Especially the recognition that this largely unseen work during the pandemic, helped to save many lives. All those who contributed to the partnership should be rightly proud of their achievements.”
Staying safe in educational settings
Many COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed both in and out of educational settings but some precautions still remain.
- Schools do not need to keep pupils in consistent groups or bubbles - some schools may still choose to do this particularly in response to local outbreaks.
- Face coverings are no longer advised for staff or pupils in schools but are recommended in crowded spaces and school buses.
- Secondary schools and colleges have been asked to do on-site testing at the beginning of the autumn term and to continue advising staff and students to take regular home tests until further advice
Some settings in the district have had positive COVID-19 cases since the return to education in September. Students that test positive need to isolate and the setting will need to put measures in place to minimise the risk of infection spreading.
It’s important that we all work together to stop the spread of the virus.
Any students with symptoms or a positive LFD test should take a PCR test. If the test is positive they must isolate for 10 days. If the test is negative and they feel well, they can return to education.
If your child has COVID-19 symptoms
Do not send your child to their school, nursery, childminder or college if:
If you or your child develop symptoms, self-isolate immediately and book a test online with the NHS or call 119.
If your child is identified as a contact of a positive COVID case
You may be contacted by NHS Test and Trace or the school or education setting and informed that your child has been identified as a contact. They will not need to isolate but will need to book a PCR test. They can still attend school or nursery if they have no symptoms and feel well. If the test is positive or they have symptoms they must then isolate at home for 10 days.
Others in the household will not be required to isolate if they are fully vaccinated or are below the age of 18 years and 6 months. If others in the household are over 18 and 6 months but not fully vaccinated, they must isolate as a contact.
If your child has to isolate
If your child is advised to stay at home and isolate, remote learning should be put in place by the school.
You may be eligible for a £500 test and Trace Support Payment if you have to care for a child who has been told to isolate and you are on a low income and unable to work from home.
Encourage staff to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and flu
Infection rates are rising and we need to do everything we can to prevent further restrictions, hospitalisations and deaths.
Please encourage your staff to get the free vaccination. Getting your COVID vaccine is easier than it’s ever been, we have walk-in clinics across Bradford District and Craven. You can find your nearest walk-in clinic online – this includes details of opening hours and the vaccine available at each site (updated regularly so please check ahead). If you prefer booking ahead, you can do so by using the NHS National Booking Service online at www.nhs.uk or by calling 119.
Those who have had their second vaccine at least six months ago are eligible for the booster jab to increase their protection. The NHS will contact you when it’s your turn to have your booster vaccine.
With the flu season upon us, it’s important that we all boost our immunity by getting protected against flu as well as COVID. If you’re eligible for a free flu vaccine from the NHS, it means you really need it and should book this through your GP practice when invited to do so or get it from your community pharmacy.
Following Hands. Face. Space and Fresh Air will also help reduce infections:
- meet people outside if possible
- open doors and windows to let in fresh air if meeting people inside
- limit the number of people you meet and avoid crowded places
- wear a face covering when it's hard to stay away from other people – particularly indoors or in crowded places
- wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day

Beware of NHS COVID Pass scams
Criminals are using the NHS COVID Pass as a way to target the public by convincing them to hand over money, financial details and personal information.
They are sending imitation text messages, emails and making phone calls pretending to be from the NHS, and offering fake vaccine certificates for sale online and through social media.
- The NHS App is free.
- The NHS COVID Pass is free.
- The NHS will never ask for payment or any financial details.
Do not respond to requests for money or important personal information such as bank details or passwords. Be alert to links and attachments in unexpected text messages or emails.
The NHS COVID Pass is available to demonstrate your COVID-19 status either in a digital or paper format via the NHS App, the NHS website or by calling 119. Information on how to get your FREE NHS COVID Pass.
