Update on new Government COVID Tier System
Bradford District has been identified as a Tier 2 area in the new national tiered approach to COVID-19 restrictions. (Announced by the Government on Monday 12th October 2020.)
There are three tiers in the new system:
-
Tier 1. The minimum level of restrictions applicable to all of England.
-
Tier 2. Applies in certain geographical areas or nationally. This is when there has been a rise in COVID-19 transmission, which cannot be contained through local responses.
-
Tier 3. Triggered in certain geographical areas or nationally when:
- Tier 2 measures have not contained the spread of the virus;
- or where there has been a significant rise in transmission.
Bradford District is in Tier 2 and these are the restrictions residents must now follow:
- Meeting with other people inside homes is restricted to one household/support bubble.
- When meeting people outside - for example, a private garden/outdoor public space - you must not meet in a group of more than six people. (Meeting people outdoors is safer than meeting indoors because fresh air provides better ventilation.) Further detail can be found in the guidance for meeting others safely, including associated exemptions.
- Visiting indoor hospitality/leisure/retail settings is restricted to one household. Two households must not meet in these settings (unless those two households are in a support bubble together.
More details will be published on the new tier system and what it means for the district in the coming days. You will be able to find this information on our COVID-19 web page.
Test and Trace Support Payments
The government recently announced a programme to provide financial support to people who have to self-isolate. From 28 September, people have been required to self-isolate by law if they test positive or are contacted by a Test and Trace service. This is to slow the spread of Covid-19 and reduce hospitalisations and deaths.
A new Test and Trace Support Payment is being introduced which supports people who are legally required to self-isolate and have reduced income because they are unable to work from home.
If you were required by law to self-isolate from 28 September you may be entitled to a support payment of £500. You can apply retrospectively.
To get the Test and Trace Support Payment, you must be:
- asked to self-isolate by NHS Test & Trace either because you have tested positive for coronavirus or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive
- employed or self-employed
- unable to work from home and will lose income as a result
- currently receiving Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit and/or Pension Credit.
You won’t be eligible if you continue to receive full wages during self-isolation or are able to work from home.
Further information and how to apply can be found here

Coronavirus testing in Bradford District
Walk-in mobile testing units are available in community locations throughout the district. These testing units are a quick and easy way to get a coronavirus test with or without an appointment.
The units are available for anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19, such as a high temperature, a new cough, or a change in sense of taste or smell, or thinks they may have the virus.
Face coverings
You need to wear a face covering in lots of different places. This is now mandatory for everyone except children under 11 and those with certain disabilities.
Please see our website for more information about face coverings including a short video by Dr Amir Khan showing how to safely put on and wear a face covering.
If you do not have to wear a face covering
People who have a reason for not wearing a face covering (if they are exempt) should not be routinely asked to give evidence of this. However it might be helpful to be able to show something on a phone, wear a badge or print out a card that can be shown to explain to others.
If you would like to use an exemption card, or an image you can display to people on your phone, you can download these from the GOV.UK website.
