Mental health awareness week 18 - 24 May
The theme this year is kindness. Kindness and our mental health are deeply connected. There’s never been a better time to show kindness – it strengthens relationships, develops community and deepens solidarity – it’s the cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health.
Being kind, either to someone you know or to a complete stranger, can help bridge the gap from disconnection to belonging.
Did you know, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health and well-being issue each year? It is normal to struggle with your mental health, especially during this difficult time so it’s important to look out for each other, be kind, and know its ok not to be ok.
Healthy Minds
There are hundreds of mental health and well-being services available locally, but often people don’t know how or where to get help, which is one of the reasons why Healthy Minds exists. They have some simple resources which signpost to key mental health and well-being support during COVID-19 for both children and adults in Bradford and Craven.
Local GPs are also asking people to embrace kindness as a way to look after our mental health and well-being during the coronavirus pandemic. This could be clapping for carers, food donations, a quick phone call to somebody isolated, checking on an elderly neighbour, collecting medicines for somebody who can’t get out, or even just smiling or waving. You can find more details on the NHS and Mental Health Foundation websites.
Here are some simple suggestions of things you could do each day this week:
Tuesday: Give praise to a family member, friend or colleague for something they’ve done well
Wednesday: Find a creative way to get active for an extra 10 minutes today
Thursday: Do something creative
Friday: Cook one of your favourite meals
Saturday: Write a gratitude list of everything you’re thankful for today
Sunday: Arrange to have a cup of tea and virtual catch up with someone you know
