As we step into 2025, we’re excited about what lies ahead for Bedford’s Town Deal projects. This year will see all our ongoing projects move into the delivery phase, marking a busy construction period for the town centre. Here’s what’s happening:
St Paul’s Square and Harpur Square
The planned works at St Paul’s and Harpur Square will begin in February, as part of the Town Deal’s vision to enhance Bedford’s cultural appeal, improve connectivity, and foster economic growth. These upgrades aim to make the town’s public spaces vibrant, accessible, and inclusive.
The improvements will make St Paul’s Square a more welcoming and accessible space, turning it into a pedestrian-friendly area with better walkways and upgraded facilities for hosting events. Over at Harpur Square, the changes will include new paving and flexible spaces that can be used for community events and performances. These upgrades aim to make both squares easier to get around, encourage walking and cycling, and create a vibrant space for people to come together and enjoy activities.
You're invited to the St Paul's and Harpur Square information stalls:
- Saturday 18 January, midday-2pm at the Harpur Centre.
- Wednesday 22 January, midday-2pm at the Harpur Centre.
Please come along to view the latest plans, talk to teams involved and share your thoughts with us.
Midland Road Regeneration
Public Realm Improvements: Construction works on Midland Road were paused between 20 December and 6 January. With the northern side now completed, work has now begun on the southern side. Midland Road has returned to the one-way system, and we greatly appreciate your patience as these improvements progress.
Shopfront Improvements: These are scheduled to begin after the public realm works are completed, which is anticipated by the end of spring 2025.
Transporting Bedford 2030
Greyfriars Junction is set to be reconfigured to create development opportunities at the former police station, while also boosting cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. Work will commence once the Midland Road public realm works are complete.
The Bedford Town Deal projects are funded by the Towns Fund grant.
