Did you know, in the UK we throw away nearly 8 million disposable nappies every day? That’s around 3 billion disposable nappies each year!
Disposable nappies are not recyclable and must go into your black rubbish bin.
However, there is an alternative… reusable nappies. These are washable nappies which can be used again and again. This week (22nd to 28th April 2024) Real Nappy week is returning, to help raise awareness of washable nappies.
There are many benefits to using real nappies, including:

The environment. Disposable nappies use precious natural resources to manufacture and generate huge amounts of waste. While washing real nappies at home uses water and energy, this is still significantly less than that used in the manufacture of disposable nappies.

The cost savings. Cloth nappies can work out cheaper in the long run, saving you around £200 to £500 over the 2.5 years that your baby is likely to be in nappies. They can also be reused for siblings or sold on for reuse by other families.

Comfort. Natural cloth nappies may be less likely to cause nappy rashes because they don’t use any harsh chemicals, dyes or plastics. The natural materials of real nappies are also more gentle and feel softer against baby’s skin.

Reliability. There are lots of different types of nappies to suit every family, from flat nappies you fold to suit your baby, to an all-in-one which you put on like a disposable nappy. If you don’t think real nappies are for you, why not try washable wipes instead? Individually, wet wipes don’t take up much room in your bin, but it is estimated that the average family will use 200 packs of disposable baby wipes over two years (if they're buying two packs of wipes per week), more if they’re used as hand and face wipes too!
That’s a lot of wipes!!!
