Sport and Physical Activity News - January 2018

Mindful sport

The Mindful Sport Programme continues in Bedford in 2018 and offers a range of options for people to get active in an informal and relaxing social environment.

Watch a video here  to learn more about the programme and what is on offer.

There is advice available from local mental health services ELFT and there is a focus around peer to peer support. Click here to visit the ELFT website for mental health support or click here for Mind BLMK.

The benefits of sport and physical activity on our mental health are endless: improved mood, decreased chance of depression and anxiety, and a better and more balanced lifestyle.

Physical activity also has an important role to play in building resilience, enabling and supporting mental health recovery and tackling stigma and discrimination.

The Mind Website  shares a report  of a recent study  which was conducted by the University of Northampton into the ’Get Set Go’ programme of Sport and Physical activity  led by  Mind UK.

The Mental Health Foundation website gives details of other studies that show that physical activity has a positive impact on our mood. One study asked people to rate their mood after period of exercise (i.e. walking or gardening) and after inactivity (i.e. reading a book). Researchers found that people felt more awake, calmer and more content after physical activity.

Fun, informal, social and affordable activities.

The #JustTurnUp programme offers the local community a healthy and fun way to get active without the commitment of long term memberships. It also offers an affordable way to try new physical activity sessions.

From January 2018 the programme has been expanded to include more adult courses on a ‘pay as you exercise’ basis, which we hope will make it easier to exercise.

The ‘Just Turn Up’ sessions start mid-January 2018, but of course you do not need to book, just turn up!

Check out the latest programme here and contact Alison Brightman or call 01234 718823 for more information.

Details of ‘Active Adults’ programmes (previously ReActive8 and ReActive8Gold) can be found by clicking here.

In order to book online you will need to register and set up an account with Bedford Borough Council. Click here to register for an account. Having an account with Bedford Borough will open up more ways to communicate with the council and access you to other services. It will also speed up the process of booking and paying for your 'Active Adults' course.

It is pleasing to report that in excess of 200 people have booked and paid online for the forthcoming ‘Active Adults’  programme, with the majority reporting the new online booking system being simple and straightforward. We still have places left on some courses and bookings are still open. Most sessions start the week commencing Monday 29th January 2018.
