Council progress

More than 100,000 schoolchildren in the Birmingham area will be safer at the seaside thanks to a new initiative launched in response to a tragic double drowning on the Welsh coast last summer.

The council’s Citizens’ Voice team has launched #GetInvolvedBrum – a campaign to put citizens at the heart of improving our care and support services. You can sign up as an organisation – or just in your own right and it might take less time than you think!

Looking after someone else’s child who isn’t a close relative? Private fostering is where a child under 16 is living with someone who isn’t a close relative. The law says the local authority must ensure these children are safe and well cared for so you have a legal duty to let Children’s Services know.

Candidates have been announced for the West Midlands Mayoral Election on 4 May and for the Hall Green and Perry Barr by-elections, also taking place on 4 May.

The council is set to approve proposals that will see new joint ventures with developers on ‘challenging’ sites and stimulate the creation of more affordable housing.

Birmingham City Council has responded to the latest letter from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to the Birmingham Independent Improvement Panel on the council’s progress.
