Zero Heroes


Cleaner, Greener Streets – and community safety

  • The council is urging all city residents and businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle waste through a new campaign called Zero Heroes. Last year, just 26.5 per cent of household waste in Birmingham was recycled, showing there’s still a long way to go. Find out more at birmingham.gov.uk/cleanerbrum.
  • Requests for help to deal with rats have significantly fallen since the introduction of wheelie bins, according to new figures.
  • New market enforcement officers will keep staff and shoppers safe by tackling crime and antisocial behaviour around Birmingham’s Bull Ring Markets.

What’s going to happen where you live? The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for Birmingham. They follow six weeks’ public consultation and draw new boundaries for each council ward in the city


‘Birmingham is open for business!’ An agreement worth up to £2 billion to the economy has been signed with Chinese property development company Country Garden. In addition, almost £1 billion of investment is being committed to redevelop the part of Birmingham set to be transformed by the arrival of HS2.


Brasshouse @Library of Birmingham has opened its doors to learners. The move of the world renowned language school to the library has allowed for an extension of library opening hours.

BikeFest


It’s feeling hot, hot, hot at Birmingham Chilli Festival on 17 September, featuring food, live music and street performances.


It’s your last chance to catch activities for Birmingham Heritage Week including booking tickets to the Flying Scotsman at Tyseley Locomotive Works


Families are being invited to get pedalling at HSBC BikeFest 2016, the free cycling festival which returns to Birmingham for its second year on 18 September. Amongst other activities, the event will feature the world’s only pop-up velodrome!


There’s a chilled vibe, sweet Reggae music, Jamaican streetfood, rum cocktails, dominoes and an open mic to be enjoyed in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, at the Caribbean Reggae Cookout, from 12noon-6pm, on 18 September.


Enjoy a celebration of the city's on-screen heritage as part of Flatpack: Assemble present Birmingham on Film, from 16 September-15 October, exploring how Birmingham has evolved on film and TV over the last decade.

More than 80 writers, performers, historians, illustrators and orators are heading for a range of city centre venues as part of the Birmingham Literature Festival, from 6-16 October. Find them in the library, at the Cathedral, in a bar or on a boat!

The world’s most famous horse show returns to Genting Arena, from 5-9 October. Horse of the Year Show brings thrills, spills and world class entertainment for the competitive rider, horse enthusiast or those simply wanting to enjoy an exciting day out.

A consultation is taking place until 30 September to ask your opinion about appropriate speed limits for roads in Edgbaston, Harborne, Selly Oak and Bournville wards. Before responding, you should look at the maps provided which will tell you the proposed speed limit for each road.
