Hello and welcome to our Safeguarding Adults training newsletter.
We all have a part to play in keeping our communities safe, and our Safeguarding Adults Board is committed to making sure you have the support you need.
Our monthly newsletter is your chance to learn more about our upcoming training events, where you can develop your skills and connect with other professionals.
We provide a wide range of free training opportunities, including e-learning modules available at any time and special courses throughout the year. Read on to find out what we have planned or visit our safeguarding adults training webpage.

This free, half-day workshop is set to explore:
- Many of the challenges that people who are homeless face which would not be the same for someone who is not homeless.
- The statutory frameworks that should be used to support people who are experiencing homelessness.
This workshop includes colleagues involved in working with people who are homeless and people who have lived experience of homelessness.

This free conference will look at learnings from previous Safeguarding Adult Reviews, and how these can be implemented into practice.
We've arranged three expert speakers for this conference:

Professor Michael Preston Shoot, a former Independent Chair of Luton's Safeguarding Adults Board. He has conducted multiple Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs), including a national review of SARs between April 2019 and March 2023.
- Mike Ward, a senior consultant at Alcohol Change UK. He has worked in alcohol and drug use since 1982, has undertaken SARs and was a key driver behind the Blue Light project.

Ellie Atkins, who manages a successful social work team in Manchester, specifically supporting people who are homeless.

This is a free, one-day safeguarding adults course looking at the Care Act and the importance of agencies working together to safeguard adults and make safeguarding personal.
The workshop will bring together workers from different agencies across South Yorkshire to look at what support different agencies and roles may provide to adults at risk of harm.
It will also consider what good practice is in meeting these needs. The workshop is aimed at Level 3 of the Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff Intercollegiate Document.
The workshops will take place on:
- Thursday 25 September at the Niagara Conference Centre in Sheffield.
- Tuesday 2 December at the Professional Development Centre, Rockingham in Rotherham.

Join us for this vital training course, designed to support professionals working with people who are struggling with addiction. Learn how to break down stigma, engage in meaningful conversations and understand your clients on a deeper level.
What you will learn:
- How stigma affects people with addiction issues.
- The power of language and perception.
- Tools to foster understanding and empathy.
- Strategies for supporting clients with dignity.

Yorkshire Water have a number of schemes available to help reduce bills, debts and provide additional support for those who need it.
Their sessions offer an insight into the financial and non-financial support schemes they offer, typically lasting up to an hour.
They have a series of webinars planned throughout August and September, which you can book onto for free using the links below:

This event is aimed at anyone that might work with adults who are at risk of self-neglect and hoarding, or with families where this might be present.
Course overview:
- Learn about the key learnings from recent Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) regarding self-neglect and hoarding.
- Learn about the summaries, tools and guidance that have been produced as a result of any findings from SARs.
- Reflect on your own practice and knowledge.
- An opportunity to identify additional training needs.
Dates and times:
- Tuesday 12 August, from 12pm to 1.30pm
- Tuesday 4 November, from 9.30am to 11am

Target audience:
Any worker that might work with adults. In particular, anyone that works with adults and families who may:
- refuse support that appears necessary to maintain their wellbeing.
- be verbally or physically threatening and abusive to workers.
- miss appointments.
- show signs of disguised compliance.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand and identify factors that might cause people to exhibit behaviour that challenges workers.
- Be able to identify risks that people who behave in a challenging way may be exposed to.
- Know where to access guidance to support our work with people exhibiting challenging behaviour.
- Consider and use good practice when working with people who we believe are exhibiting challenging behaviour.
- Be able to use risk assessment and management tools when working with people who may behave in a way we find challenging.
- Know what support might be provided by different agencies, bodies and panels when working with people behaving in a challenging way.
