City of Tyler wins national and statewide excellence awards
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the Tyler City Council was presented with national and statewide awards recognizing various City programs.
"These awards recognize that these projects, our City Council's direction, and our employees are among the best in the state," said City Manager Ed Broussard. "It is a great honor to our organization and our community."
The City of Tyler earned two 2022 Municipal Excellence Awards recognizing the City's management innovation and public safety programs for cities with populations over 25,000. The awards recognized the City for its Infants at Work pilot program and the addition of a Homeless Coordinator position for the Tyler Police Department.
Organizational Development Department presents their awards to City Councilmembers and Mayor Don Warren at the City Council meeting on Oct. 26, 2022.
The Infants at Work program started in 2021 as an initiative to improve the work-life integration for employees by recognizing a parent's and caregiver's responsibility to their job and family. The program supports City staff with the transition to parenthood by allowing them to bring their babies to work until they are six months old.
The City of Tyler was also recognized by Smith County Champions for Children as the 2022 Champions for Children Corporate Champion Award for the City's effort in supporting employees with newborn children through the Infants at Work program.
In the fall of 2021, the Tyler Police Department added the position of Homeless Coordinator and assigned Officer Johnny Green to the role. Officer Green works with the homeless population as the homeless coordinator to identify individual needs and access local resources. Since the position was created, homelessness in Tyler has decreased, and more individuals are seeking social services.
Lt. Matt Amyser, Sergeant Kevin Mobley and Chief Jimmy Toler of the Tyler Police Department present their award to Tyler City Councilmembers and Mayor Don Warren at the City Council meeting on Oct. 26, 2022.

Innovative problem-solving, excellence in management, increasing resident participation, and reaching toward higher service levels are all daily occurrences in Texas cities, and they deserve recognition. This awards program seeks out the best of these programs to honor.
