TEA Announcement
New Science Safety Courses Available
TEA is excited to announce the release of new science safety courses. These three one-hour courses are designed to provide safety guidance to elementary, middle, and high school science educators. The courses are offered as a courtesy to educators and may not provide all the science safety guidance that schools and districts find necessary to meet laws and rules. The courses are live in the TEALearn catalog: https://register.tealearn.com/
Which staff need science safety training and how often do they need it?
Teachers of prekindergarten through high school and other district personnel must receive training on the Hazards Communications Act prior to working in the area or with hazardous materials. Teachers new to the profession must receive safety training before they work with or in an area containing hazardous chemicals; however, district personnel changing assignments only require training on hazardous materials not covered in their initial training and updates. Additional information is available in The Texas Education Agency Texas Safety Standards can be found on the TEA science web page.

Upcoming TEA K-12 STEM Teacher Professional Development Dates
This professional development prepares teachers for successful implementation of STEM instruction in their classrooms by immersing teachers directly in the role of STEM learner, engaging first-hand in high-impact STEM practices such as project-based learning, design-based challenges, and computational thinking. To better understand the role STEM plays in education, educators will make connections between the Texas STEM framework, STEM fluency skills, and contemporary workforce demands. Most importantly, educators will begin the work of embedding these STEM strategies into what matters most — their daily work with students.
Region 20: September 13, 2023 registration

News from NASA
Grow Artemis Moon Trees!
NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement Next Gen STEM project is excited to kick-off the upcoming school year with a one-of-a-kind opportunity aimed at engaging the Artemis generation in activities focused on Earth science and global stewardship! Nearly 2,000 tree seeds of 5 different species traveled into lunar orbit aboard the Orion spacecraft as part of the Artemis 1 Mission, thousands of miles beyond the Moon. The seeds spent close to 4 weeks in space before returning to Earth to be studied and germinated into seedlings by the United Sates Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. Educators can use a variety of resources to lead interactive lessons around your Moon Tree including NASA’s Moon Tree STEM Tool Kit as well as Forest Service’s Moon Trees LIVE Distance Learning Program and Natural Inquirer Moon Trees materials.
