Update on the Science TEKS Review Process
Revisions to High School Science TEKS Adopted
At the November 2020 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved new Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for the following four high school courses: Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC), and Physics. The recently adopted TEKS will be filed with the Texas Register later this month and available on TEA’s Adopted State Board of Education Rules - Not Yet Effective web page until they become effective. The new TEKS for Biology, Chemistry, IPC, and Physics are scheduled for implementation beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.
The SBOE’s TEKS review process for kindergarten–grade 8 and additional high school science courses is still underway.
Science Grades 6–8 TEKS Draft Recommendations Available
The SBOE review process for the TEKS calls for multiple, separate work groups. Work Group C convened in Fall 2020 to develop recommendations to revise the science TEKS for middle school, grades 6–8. The draft recommendations for science grades 6–8 are currently available for review and feedback on the Science TEKS Review Work Group Drafts web page under the heading Work Group C.
Feedback on work group recommendations will be accepted throughout the review and revision process for the science TEKS. When providing specific comments and recommendations, please identify the work group in the subject line of the email. For example, in the subject line, please indicate "Science TEKS Review Work Group C Feedback." Please submit comments to TEA at teks@tea.texas.gov.
Updates regarding the science TEKS review are also provided on the Science TEKS Review web page.
