2017-2018 Project SERV Hurricane Recovery Grant

New Grant Period and Pre-Award Date

The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) has issued a new fund source for the 2017-2018 Project SERV Hurricane Recovery Grant. As a result, the beginning and ending dates of this grant have changed. The new begin date is March 15, 2018 and the new end date is March 15, 2020. Additionally, pre-award is now allowed back to August 25, 2017, the date of the hurricane.

Additional Opportunity to Apply

Since USDE is now allowing pre-award costs to be charged to this grant from August 25, 2017, eligible local educational agencies (LEAs) that chose not to apply for the 2017-2018 Project SERV Hurricane Recovery Grant now have one last opportunity to apply for funding. The deadline to apply for this grant is Friday, May 4, 2018, 5:00 p.m. Central Time. Since this is a paper application, it must be received via postal mail or in person in the Document Control Center at TEA by the date and time specified above.

Eligible LEAs

A list of eligible LEAs and funding amounts are available here:

Current Applicants

If your LEA already has applied for a Project SERV grant, no action is needed at this time. Once all applications have been received, a grant negotiator will contact you to finalize your application and allocation prior to issuing a Notice of Grant Award (NOGA).

Accessing the Application

To access the grant application and supporting materials, go to the TEA Grant Opportunities page and select “2017-2018 Project SERV Hurricane Recovery Grant” from the ‘Application Name’ drop down box. It is listed alphabetically.

Once you get to the page for the Project SERV grant, the paper application and instructions can be found in the section called ‘Application and Support Information’. Once completed, the application must be mailed to TEA. Mailing instructions are listed on the first page of the application at the top.

General Allowable Activities

The Program Guidelines for the 2017-2018 Project SERV Hurricane Recovery Grant outline general allowable activities under three specific categories:

  • Counseling
  • Substitutes and Other Staff
  • Transportation and Other Costs

If you select an activity already pre-printed under one of these categories, it can be quickly approved during the negotiation process. However, if you indicate an activity in your application under “other”, TEA must consult with the USDE to determine whether it is allowable under the grant. This will delay the processing of your application. Please carefully review both the allowable and unallowable activities listed in the Program Guidelines.
