There were more than 150 Houston area pastors in attendance. The event provided a platform for the pastors to meet numerous Prison Ministry leaders and organizations and explore all aspects of Prison Ministry. The featured speakers were Byron Johnson and Garland Hunt. The event conveyed the need for the community to become more involved in prison ministry.
Unlocking DOORS to Reduce Recidivism

Volunteer Training
As a volunteers you are required to attend a refresher training every two years and for your convenience Volunteer Services offers an online refresher training however you are required to alternate the in-person and online trainings. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact Volunteer Services 936-437-3026.
Volunteer Participation Log
Volunteers are required to complete the Volunteer Participation Log before and after each unit visit. Do not hesitate to ask a staff member where this log is kept so you to ensure your hours are being logged. Why is this important? The Unit/Departmental Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for logging your specific hours. This ensures the monthly report is accurate and further ensures you are reflected as an active volunteer. Periodically, Volunteer Services purges the volunteer database of those who show as inactive. Ensure your volunteer hours are being recorded!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Congratulations to Volunteer James Reed for receiving the Carol S. Vance Volunteer of the Year Award at the 2013 Governor's Criminal Justice Volunteer Services Awards. Mr. Reed was recognized for taking action and solving real problems in his community. In 2001, he began his journey in prison ministry by offering a program called Chapel of Hope at the Hutchins State Jail, since that time he has dedicated himself to assisting releasees in their transition from prison to the community. For more than 10 years Mr. Reed has organized Praise In The Park in the Dallas area, an event that recognizes individuals who have been out of prison for two or more years and have made a successful transition to society.
